Apatzingan

Introduction

Apatzingán is a city and the seat of its surrounding municipality, located in the west-central part of the Mexican state of Michoacán. Use it as a base for exploring this part of the state, keeping in mind that the city and its municipality share the same name.

Getting around

Apatzingán has no metro, tram or passenger rail service, so plan on getting around by foot, bus and taxi. Long-distance coaches are how most visitors arrive, with documented routes linking the city to Morelia, Uruapan, Lázaro Cárdenas, Nueva Italia and Mexico City, plus longer services to Guadalajara, Tijuana, Mazatlán and Hermosillo. Services are spread across several stops and terminals rather than one consolidated station — among them the Terminal de Autobuses de Apatzingán – ETN on Cornelio Ortiz de Zarate in Colonia Centro, a stop on Calle Cayetano Andrade Oriente in the Centro, and an Autovias stop on Calle Heriberto Jara Oriente in the Centro — so confirm which one your coach uses before setting out. Buy intercity tickets through the bus companies or online booking platforms, and book ahead for the longer runs such as Mexico City or Guadalajara.

Within the city, local buses and colectivos (shared vans) are the everyday way residents get around: inexpensive and covering the main streets and neighbourhoods, though routes and stops are not always clearly signposted for visitors, so ask your accommodation or a local which vehicle goes to your destination. Taxis are widely available and the simplest choice if you are unsure of bus routes or carrying luggage; for short trips around the centre they are quick and inexpensive. Ride-hailing apps are not guaranteed to have coverage here, so check whether an app shows available cars before relying on it, agree the fare or confirm the meter before you set off, and prefer taxis arranged through your accommodation or a trusted local contact. The historic centre, including the area around the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, is compact enough to explore on foot, taking in the main plaza, the cathedral and nearby shops and restaurants — but the semi-arid climate brings high temperatures and strong evaporation, so do your walking in the cooler parts of the day, carry water, and use taxis or local transport for longer cross-town trips.

Three days in Apatzingan

Day one: Start in Colonia Centro, where the Immaculate Conception Cathedral anchors the historic heart of Apatzingán. Wander the surrounding streets, including Calle Cayetano Andrade Oriente, to get your bearings in the Centro. In the afternoon, use the local taxis to reach other parts of the city, and buy what you need for the days ahead within the centre.

Day two: Take a longer look at the city's services and transport links. The Terminal on Calle Heriberto Jara Oriente is where you'll find Autobuses and ETN services, along with Autovias and Cornelio Ortiz Zarate, connecting Apatzingán with Morelia, Uruapan, Lázaro Cárdenas, Nueva Italia, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Tijuana, Mazatlán and Hermosillo. Ride out to see how the city spreads beyond the centre, then return to Colonia Centro for a meal of Mexican cooking typical of Michoacán.

Day three: Spend your final morning revisiting the Centro and the area around the cathedral at an easy pace. Check the Autobuses and ETN services at the Terminal for your onward journey, whether toward Morelia, Uruapan or the coast at Lázaro Cárdenas, and use the taxis to get there with your bags.
