Tepexpan

Introduction

Tepexpan is the largest town in the Acolman municipality in the State of Mexico, Mexico. It is a substantial community, so expect the bustle of a working Mexican town rather than a purpose-built resort.

Getting around

Tepexpan spreads across five districts — Anahuac 1 Sección, Anahuac II Sección, Chimalpa, Los Reyes, and Paraje El Faro — so it doesn't cluster around a single core. Use the central plaza and the church of Santa Maria Magdalena as your orientation point when you arrive, and explore that heart of town on foot, since the main points of interest sit close together. Walking between districts isn't realistic; treat your feet as the way to cover one area at a time and switch to buses or taxis to move between them.

For anything beyond a walk, you'll rely on buses, shared transport, and taxis. The key public option is the Mexibús network, and the Ecatepec – Base Texcoco corridor is the most useful for visitors: it links the Ecatepec base with Texcoco, both significant regional hubs, runs daily from early morning until around the evening, and comes roughly every fifteen minutes, with the full end-to-end trip taking about an hour and a half. The Ecatepec – Mercado de Chiconcuax route runs along the same corridor as an additional option. Fares aren't published with the route information, so check the Moovit app or the operator's official site and have small change or a rechargeable card ready. Taxis and ride-hailing fill the gaps — especially late in the evening after the Mexibús stops running, or for reaching Chimalpa, Los Reyes, and Paraje El Faro; agree on the fare or confirm the app price before you set off. There's no direct airport connection described, so plan a two-stage journey: get into the Mexico City metropolitan area first, then continue out via the regional network, with the Ecatepec – Base Texcoco corridor as your key link on the second stage. Allow generous time and avoid arriving late in the day if you plan to use it.

Three days in Tepexpan

Day one: Start in Tepexpan itself, getting your bearings on foot through the centre and the surrounding streets. Walking is the simplest way to link the town's districts, including Sección Anahuac and Anahuac II Sección, Chimalpa, Los Reyes and Paraje El Faro. Use the Mexibús to reach Ecatepec and its mercado, where you can eat your way through the stalls before returning to Tepexpan for the evening.

Day two: Head north to Acolman in the State of Mexico, where the monastery and its surroundings reward a slow morning. Continue on to Texcoco and the area around Base Texcoco, then loop back through Santa Maria Magdalena and Chiconcuax. Fares on the Mexibús and the local taxis make this a day of short hops rather than one long haul; check routes on Moovit before you set out.

Day three: Give the day to the wider Anahuac area and the Mexican character of the towns around Tepexpan, allowing time for the mercado and for walking between stops. If you want a change of scale, Mexico City lies within reach, but allow for the journey and plan your return before evening. Keep the final afternoon loose so you can revisit whichever part of Tepexpan you liked best.
