Chicoloapan

Introduction

Chicoloapan de Juárez is the municipal seat and largest city of the municipality of Chicoloapan, in the State of Mexico. It sits in the eastern part of the state, just east of Chimalhuacán and northeast of the Federal District, and forms part of the Greater Mexico City urban area.

Getting around

Chicoloapan is a residential and working city rather than a tourist destination, and there is no dedicated visitor transport system. Getting around relies on the same public transport, taxis and ride-hailing that residents use, plus private car. Because the city sits within the Greater Mexico City urban area, most practical journeys involve connecting into the capital's transport network rather than moving around within Chicoloapan alone. Walking covers short local errands, but the city is large and spread out, and the useful connections to the capital are reached by vehicle, not on foot.

Buses are the mainstay for local and regional trips. A direct Texcoco service departs from Piedras Negras station and arrives at TAPO, Mexico City's eastern bus terminal, running roughly every 15 minutes daily and taking about 1 hour 10 minutes. For the fastest public-transport route into the capital, take the Mexibús (Transmasivo) from Chimalhuacán to Pantitlán, then transfer to Metro Line 1 to Merced — around 38 minutes including the transfer. Chicoloapan itself has no metro, rail or tram station, so Pantitlán is your mental anchor for transfers between the Mexibús and Metro Line 1, and TAPO your anchor for the direct bus connection. Taxis cover the roughly 17-mile road distance to Mexico City in around half an hour depending on traffic, and are also straightforward for shorter local trips. BlaBlaCar Mexico lists shared rides from Chicoloapan de Juárez to Ciudad de México a few times daily, taking about 49 minutes. If you are arriving by air, note that Chicoloapan has no airport: land at Mexico City's airport, reach the Metro or take a taxi or ride-hailing car, then travel to TAPO for the direct bus toward Chicoloapan or use Pantitlán to pick up the Mexibús toward Chimalhuacán.

Three days in Chicoloapan

Day one: Base yourself in Chicoloapan and get your bearings in the centre, where the streets around the main square give you your first sense of daily life in the State of Mexico. Because Chicoloapan sits within Greater Mexico City, you can treat it as a quiet starting point rather than a destination in itself. Walking is the best way to cover the centre, and buses will take you onward when you are ready to range further.

Day two: Head west toward Chimalhuacán, a neighbouring municipality in the State of Mexico, and continue into the Federal District if you want more time in the metropolis. From Chicoloapan you can reach Texcoco, Piedras Negras and TAPO, the eastern bus terminal in Mexico City, and from there the wider city opens up. For longer hops, Mexibús and Transmasivo serve the area, while Pantitlán connects you to Metro Line services into the centre.

Day three: Use the Metro to explore Mexico City itself, starting from Pantitlán and working toward Merced and the historic centre. Buy a Metro CDMX card to keep your travel simple, and use taxis or BlaBlaCar Mexico for trips the rail network does not cover well. If you are on a budget, BlaBlaCar and the Metro together let you see Ciudad de México and return to Chicoloapan without much outlay. Keep your days loose, because getting across Greater Mexico City takes time.
