Ciudad Guzman

Introduction

Ciudad Guzmán is a city in the Mexican state of Jalisco, set at an elevation of 1,507 metres above sea level and located roughly 124 kilometres south of Guadalajara. Its position in the south of the state makes it a natural stop for travellers moving between Guadalajara and the region beyond.

Getting around

Ciudad Guzmán is compact and its sights cluster around the historic downtown and the Cathedral de San José, so walking is the best way to explore the colonial streets and get a feel for the city's character. Base yourself near the centre and you can reach the cathedral and the historic core on foot; for anything beyond the centre, take a taxi or a local bus rather than a long walk. Keep the elevation in mind when planning walks, as the city sits at about 1,500 metres.

There is no metro, tram, light rail or suburban rail within the city, and no train service brings you in, so plan around road transport. Long-distance buses are the main way travellers arrive, with connections to and from both Guadalajara and Mexico City; the Guadalajara route is the most useful for most visitors and is served by three first-class operators — Primera Plus, Futura Select and Elite Select — with amenities such as air conditioning and Wi-Fi, and pets allowed on some services. Departures run from early morning until the evening but frequency is limited, so check times and book in advance online or at the bus station, and compare the three companies for times, fares and amenities. From Guadalajara the journey takes a couple of hours; a taxi or private transfer is an alternative but costs considerably more. For short hops within the city — between your accommodation, the downtown and the bus terminal — taxis are the most straightforward option, and ride-hailing apps are a convenient alternative, particularly if you prefer to know the fare in advance; agree the fare or confirm the app price before you set off.

When to go

Ciudad Guzmán has a humid subtropical climate, so your choice of season shapes the trip. Summer brings the wet season: thunderstorms and cloudy days are common and humidity is noticeably higher. June, the warmest month on average, falls within this stretch, so expect heat alongside the rain.

Three days in Ciudad Guzman

Day one: Base yourself in Ciudad Guzmán, a Mexican city in Jalisco within easy reach of Guadalajara. Settle in, get your bearings, and use the Wi-Fi at your accommodation to plan the days ahead. Keep the first day light and let the city's pace set your rhythm.

Day two: Head to the Cathedral and the San José area to see the city's central landmarks. Long-distance buses such as Primera Plus, Futura Select and Elite Select connect Ciudad Guzmán with Guadalajara and Mexico City, so you can arrange onward travel or a day trip from the terminals. Departures are frequent enough to keep your plans flexible.

Day three: Take a slower day and enjoy the climate. Summer, June and the wet season bring rain, while the dry months from January onward are clearer; fog can appear in October, and April and May see little rainfall. Use the mild, dry conditions to walk the streets and soak up the everyday life of the city before you leave.
