Iguala de la Independencia

Introduction

Iguala de la Independencia is a historic city in the Mexican state of Guerrero, in the southwest of the country, set roughly 102 km from the state capital, Chilpancingo. Its official name points to its place in Mexico's independence story, and the city's historic character is its main draw for travellers passing through the region.

Use Iguala as a stop between the state capital and the surrounding Guerrero countryside, and come expecting a sense of the country's past rather than a resort stay.

Getting around

Iguala has no rail, metro or tram network, so all movement is road-based. The compact historic core, with its churches, markets and civic buildings, is best explored on foot; the San Francisco Church and its surrounding tamarind trees sit at the centre of this walkable area. Beyond the centre, the city spreads out along and around Federal Highway 95, and walking to distant neighbourhoods or the outskirts is less practical. For the Lagoon of Tuxpan on the city's edge, take a bus or taxi rather than walking.

Buses are the backbone of local transport, with buses and collective transport serving the main roads and linking the centre with outlying areas such as Tuxpan. Because Iguala is a highway city rather than a dense grid with a formal urban bus map, ask at your accommodation or at the bus terminal which local route serves your destination and confirm the return schedule before setting out. Taxis are straightforward for short trips across town or for places off a bus route; use licensed taxis, agree on the fare before departure where possible, and ask your hotel or a trusted local contact to call one rather than hailing a cab on an unfamiliar street at night. Ride-hailing apps are not documented here, so do not assume they will work reliably. For longer journeys, intercity coaches are the main option, and booking ahead is wise around the late-February Iguala Flag Fair, when demand for travel into the city rises.

Three days in Iguala de la Independencia

Day one: Start in the centre of Iguala, where the San Francisco Church anchors the historic core and the town's place in the story of Mexican independence is the theme of the day. Take your time around the church and the surrounding streets, then use the centre as your base for getting oriented. In the evening, settle into local Guerrero cooking and let the pace of the town set your schedule.

Day two: Head out of the city toward the Lagoon at Tuxpan for a slower day by the water, travelling by bus or taxi from Iguala. Because Iguala sits within easy reach of Chilpancingo and the Federal Highway, you can plan the journey around your own timing rather than a fixed schedule. Return to the city in the evening.

Day three: Use your last day to explore more of Iguala itself, and if your visit falls in February, the Iguala Flag Fair gives the city a festive rhythm worth planning around. Beyond the centre, let the town's everyday streets fill the remaining hours before you move on.
