Miguel Hidalgo
Introduction
Miguel Hidalgo is a borough in western Mexico City that brings together some of the capital's most storied districts. Within its borders you'll find the historic areas of Tacuba, Chapultepec and Tacubaya, along with neighbourhoods such as Polanco and Lomas de Chapultepec. Tacubaya and Tacuba each have long histories as independent settlements, and the city has recognised both as "Barrios Mágicos" for tourism purposes. The borough's landmarks make it one of the most visited parts of Mexico City, second only to Cuauhtémoc, where the historic centre lies. Chief among them are Chapultepec Park and the Museo Nacional de Antropología, which anchor the western side of the city and give Miguel Hidalgo its particular draw for travellers.Three days in Miguel Hidalgo
Day one: Start in Miguel Hidalgo, one of Mexico City's sixteen boroughs, and get your bearings in Chapultepec. Chapultepec Park is the green heart of the area, and within it you'll find the Museo Nacional de Antropología, where the country's pre-Hispanic past is laid out room by room. Give the museum the better part of a day rather than rushing it, then walk the park's paths as the light softens.
Day two: Head north into Tacuba and Tacubaya, older quarters of Miguel Hidalgo whose streets and markets show a side of the city beyond the museums. These are working neighbourhoods, so wander without an agenda, stopping where the food stalls and local life draw you in. In the evening, return toward Chapultepec and watch the park empty out.
Day three: Turn to the western edge of the borough, where Polanco and Lomas sit. Polanco is the polished, upscale face of Miguel Hidalgo, with broad avenues, shops and restaurants, while Lomas climbs into quieter residential hills above it. Both are part of the city's Barrios Mágicos programme, and together they round off three days that move from park and museum to old neighbourhoods to the borough's wealthier districts. From here, Cuauhtémoc and the historic centre lie just to the east if you have time to continue.
