Mu-se
Introduction
Muse is the capital of Mu Se District and the main town of Mu Se Township in northern Shan State, Myanmar. It sits on the Shweli River as a border town, linked by a bridge to Ruili in Yunnan Province, China.
Trade with China defines the town: Muse is a major regional hub for cross-border commerce between the two countries.
Three days in Mu-se
Day one: Start in Mu Se District, in Shan State, Myanmar, and get your bearings in the town of Muse. Walk down to the Shweli River, which marks the edge of town and the line toward Ruili in Yunnan Province, China. Spend the rest of the day watching the trade traffic that gives the place its rhythm, as goods and people move across the border.
Day two: Give the day to the border itself. Cross into Ruili, in Yunnan Province, China, and see how the two sides of the crossing differ. Come back to Mu Se Township in the afternoon and follow the trade activity along the roads and riverbank, where much of the town's daily life is tied to what comes and goes across the frontier.
Day three: Slow down in Muse and Mu Se District. Return to the Shweli River for a quieter look at the water and the far bank, then spend your last hours around the market and transport areas where trade between Myanmar and China is arranged. Leave with a sense of how Shan State's border town lives off the movement next door.
