Ann
Introduction
Ann is a town in Rakhine State, Myanmar, and it is also the base for the Myanmar Army's Western Command, whose general headquarters are located here. The town is served by Ann Airport.
Getting around
Ann has little in the way of a formal public transport system, so plan on arranging your own transport for most journeys. Within town, motorcycle taxis are the most common way to cover short distances; agree on the fare before you set off, since meters and fixed pricing are not the norm. Private drivers can be hired if you prefer a car, and are a sensible choice for longer trips or if you have luggage. Negotiate the price in advance for any private arrangement, as fixed rates are rare. There is no meaningful ride-hailing presence, so in practice "taxis" means hiring a car with a local driver or taking a motorcycle taxi for shorter hops. Road quality varies and navigation can be difficult, so it is best to arrange your driver through your hotel or a trusted local contact. Walking is a reasonable way to get around the centre at a relaxed pace, though the climate is hot and humid — light natural fabrics are most comfortable — and you should dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, especially around temples. Shoes that are easy to remove are handy, since you will need to take off your shoes and socks before entering pagodas, monasteries and private homes.
Ann has no railway station, and the rail network in this part of Myanmar is sparse; there is no metro or tram system to speak of. If you arrive by train from elsewhere in the country, you will need to complete the final leg by car or bus — the nearest rail access is generally reached via Kyaukpyu, with Sittwe and Thandwe also serving as transit points. Buses connect Ann to the main settlements in Rakhine State and are the budget-friendly option for regional travel, varying widely in comfort from basic minibuses to air-conditioned express coaches, so check what class of bus you are buying a ticket for. Morning departures are generally recommended. Typical connections run a few hours from Kyaukpyu on local roads, a long day's journey from Sittwe, and roughly half a day from Thandwe to the south. Because schedules and vehicle quality change, confirm departure times and ticket details locally or through your accommodation before you travel. Ann has no direct international flights, and sources disagree on whether the town itself has a small domestic airport, so verify the current situation before you book; the nearest cities with air connections are Kyaukpyu, Sittwe and Thandwe, from which bus is the cheapest onward choice and a hired car with a local driver the fastest and most flexible. Carry cash, since cards are rarely accepted and ATMs are unstable or absent, and bring Myanmar Kyats exchanged in Yangon or Mandalay, as provincial rates are unfavourable.
Three days in Ann
Day one: Arrive in Ann, a town in Rakhine State, Myanmar, and settle into your base. The area is shaped by the presence of the Myanmar Army and Western Command, so expect a quiet, military-influenced atmosphere. Private transport is the practical way to get around; negotiate your fares in advance. There is not much in the way of formal sightseeing, so use the afternoon to orient yourself and walk the town's streets.
- Ann Airport is the arrival point if you fly in.
- Carry Myanmar Kyats in cash, as ATMs are unreliable.
Day two: Take a road trip to one of the nearby towns. Buses run to Kyaukpyu, Sittwe and Thandwe, but services are limited, so plan your morning carefully. A typical day involves long stretches of travel and waiting, so carry water and snacks. Walking shoes are useful if you plan to explore on foot at either end of the journey.
Day three: Spend your final morning in Ann before departing. If you are heading onward to Yangon or Mandalay, arrange your connections in advance, as routes are indirect. There is little formal infrastructure for visitors, so keep your schedule flexible and confirm your transport the day before. Within the town, private arrangements remain the most reliable way to move around.
