Temara

Introduction

Temara is a coastal city in Morocco, sitting directly south of Rabat on the Atlantic coast within the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region. Part of the capital's suburban area, it serves as the capital of Skhirate-Témara Prefecture, and it is twinned with Saint Germain en Laye in France.

For a visitor, the draw is the shoreline: the city has beaches and a small pleasure port, making it an easy coastal stop in the orbit of Rabat.

When to go

Temara has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate, which means the seasons shape your trip in fairly predictable ways. Winter is the wettest part of the year, so if you visit then, expect more rainy days than at other times, along with cooler conditions than you would find in summer.

Summer, by contrast, is hot and much drier, with little rainfall. This is the warmest time of year, so plan around the heat if you travel then.

Three days in Temara

Day one: Start in Temara itself, getting your bearings in the town before heading north along the Atlantic coast to Rabat. The capital's medina, kasbah and waterfront are all within reach, and the beach at Sal makes an easy place to slow down. In the evening, return to Temara for a quiet dinner.

Day two: Head south along the coast to Skhirate, where the long stretch of sand is the main draw. Continue on to Kénitra if you want a change of pace, or spend the afternoon in Temara's own streets, which are calmer than those of its larger neighbours. The Atlantic keeps the air mild in winter and warm in summer.

Day three: Use your last day for the places you passed by. Saint Germain and Laye are both within the wider Témara Prefecture, and each offers a slower, greener side of the region. If you would rather stay close to the water, the Mediterranean-facing stretch near Part is an option, though the Atlantic shore is what defines this part of Morocco. End back in Temara, where the pace of the town makes for an unhurried final evening.
