Al Khums
Introduction
Al Khums, also known as Khoms, sits in northwestern Libya along the Mediterranean Sea. It was once a district in its own right, and the town of Khoms served as its capital. Today the area forms part of the Murqub District.
When to go
Al Khums has a hot desert climate, so the year divides into a hot season and a milder season rather than four distinct seasons. Summer brings intense sun and very little rain, and you should expect the hottest conditions of the year; plan outdoor sightseeing for early morning or evening, when the heat eases.
Winters are mild by desert standards and are the most comfortable stretch for exploring the town and nearby coastal sites. Rain is scarce even then, and daytime temperatures are far gentler than in summer.
Three days in Al Khums
Day one: Begin in Al Khums, also known as Khoms, a coastal city in Murqub District, Libya, sitting beside the Mediterranean Sea. Take your time getting oriented along the waterfront, where the sea shapes the rhythm of the day. In summer the weather is warm, so plan your walking for the cooler hours and keep the middle of the day slow.
Day two: Give the Mediterranean Sea your full attention. It defines Al Khums and the wider Murqub District, and a day spent near the water is the simplest way to understand the city. Winters here are mild rather than harsh, though rain does fall, so keep an eye on the sky if you visit outside summer.
Day three: Return to the parts of Al Khums you liked best. Today is a good moment to slow down, revisit the coast, and let the city's easy pace settle in before you move on. Whether you came for the sea or for the quiet of Murqub District, three days is enough to feel at home here.
