Az Zawiyah
Introduction
Zawiya, also spelled Zawia, sits on Libya's northwestern Mediterranean coast in the historic region of Tripolitania, roughly 47 km west of Tripoli. It serves as the capital of the Zawiya District, making it a natural stop for travellers moving along the coastal corridor between the capital and points further west.
Getting around
Az Zawiyah has no metro, tram or urban rail network, and no suburban rail link to Tripoli or anywhere else, so you get around by road, on foot and with locally arranged transport. Walking works well along the Mediterranean waterfront, the working harbour and the old quarters with their traditional North African urban architecture; the harbour is at its liveliest early in the morning when the fishing vessels return. Some inland neighbourhoods are further out and call for a longer walk or a short ride. The climate is Mediterranean, which moderates the heat compared with the Libyan interior, but this is still a hot semi-arid region, so do your walking in the cooler parts of the day.
Taxis operate within the city and fares are negotiated rather than metered, so agree the price before you set off; no ride-hailing app is described, so arrange taxis directly, on the street, through your accommodation or by asking locally. For reaching Tripoli and other towns, buses and shared transport run along the coastal routes, with services shared with other passengers rather than private hire. Schedules can be irregular, so treat departure times as approximate, confirm times locally before you set out and allow extra time rather than planning a tight connection. There is nothing to buy in the way of train tickets, transit cards or travel passes for use inside the city. No airport serving Az Zawiyah is described, so arriving by air means reaching the city overland from Tripoli by bus, shared transport or taxi. Bring cash for taxis and shared transport, and check current security conditions, travel advisories and guidance from local authorities before travelling.
When to go
Zawiya has a hot semi-arid climate, so the timing of your visit shapes how much you can comfortably do outdoors. Summers are hot and dry, with little to no rainfall, making this the least comfortable season for sightseeing. If you travel during the hot months, plan your exploring for the early morning or evening and keep the middle of the day free.
Winters are mild rather than cold, and this is when most of the year's limited rain falls. You can expect occasional wet, grey days, but conditions are generally tolerable for getting out and exploring the city.
Three days in Az Zawiyah
Day one: Start in Az Zawiyah, the city also known as Zawiya, in Zawiya District. Walk through the streets to get your bearings in this North African city, then head toward the Mediterranean coast. In the evening, take a taxi to Tripoli, the capital of Libya, and spend the night there.
Day two: Explore Tripoli, in the Tripolitania region. Walk through the city and take in the Libyan character of the streets. Taxis are available if you prefer not to walk. In the evening, return to Az Zawiyah.
Day three: Spend your final day in Az Zawiyah. Bring water, as summers are hot and winters are mild. Schedules for taxis can be irregular, so plan ahead. If you have time, walk along the coast and enjoy the Mediterranean before you leave.
