Kalmunai

Introduction

Kalmunai is a city in the Ampara District of Sri Lanka's Eastern Province. Use this guide as a starting point for orienting yourself within the district and the wider region before you plan the rest of your route.

Getting around

Getting around Kalmunai and its neighbourhoods is done by road: local buses, hired vehicles and walking. Buses are the main public option and connect the city with the wider region, with services running to and from Kalmunai station, the town's bus point. For local trips, hiring a car or taxi through your hotel is the most straightforward approach, since app-based ride-hailing is not documented here. Kalmunai Town itself is compact enough to explore on foot for shopping and errands around the central marketplace, but the city's divisions and suburbs stretch along the coast, so you will likely need a vehicle to reach areas such as Sainthamaruthu in the south or Maruthamunai.

For longer journeys, driving is a practical alternative, and the bus station in town is the hub for onward regional travel. If your journey continues inland, ask about routes via the Kittanky causeway at Natpiddimunai, the main access point to the western parts of Ampara District. Basing yourself in Kalmunai Town gives you the easiest access to the marketplace, services and transport.

Three days in Kalmunai

Day one: Start in Kalmunai Town, the commercial heart of this Eastern Province city, and use it as your base for getting oriented. From here you can take buses to the surrounding coastal settlements, beginning with Sainthamaruthu just to the south. If you want a quieter stretch of shoreline, head north to Maruthamunai, where the pace slows and the beach is the main draw.

Day two: Push further along the coast to Kittanky and Natpiddimunai, both within easy reach of Kalmunai by bus. These smaller settlements reward a slow day of walking and watching the fishing boats come in. Getting between them is straightforward if you check bus times locally, and you can return to Kalmunai Town by evening.

Day three: Use your last day to explore Basing and the wider Ampara District surroundings before heading back. Basing offers a change of scenery from the coast, and the district's interior gives you a sense of how varied this part of Sri Lanka is. Return to Kalmunai Town to wrap up your three days.
