Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia
Introduction
Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia is a large municipality immediately south of the Colombo Municipal Council area, separated from the city by the Dehiwala canal that forms its northern boundary. Its southern limits reach Borupana Road, while the Weras Ganga and its canal system mark the eastern edge and take in some areas beyond. The town sits along the Galle Road artery, which runs down the coast, and it functions together with Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte as one of the two large suburban centres of Colombo, forming part of the most urbanised core of the Colombo Metropolitan Region.
The area has seen extensive population growth and rapid industrialisation and urbanisation, with residential and commercial overspill from the city reshaping it. Among its landmarks are the National Zoological Gardens, one of Asia's largest, along with the Colombo South Teaching Hospital at Kalubowila and Colombo Airport at Ratmalana.
Three days in Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia
Day one: Start in Dehiwala and give the National Zoological Gardens your morning, since the site is large enough to fill several hours on foot. In the afternoon, follow Galle Road, the main artery that threads through both Dehiwala and Mount Lavinia, and use it to get your bearings between the two. If you want a quieter stretch, head towards Borupana Road and the Weras Ganga, where the water and the roadside give the area a slower pace than the coast road.
Day two: Base yourself in Mount Lavinia and spend the day along its seafront, which is the reason the town draws visitors at all. The beach and the headland are the centre of gravity here, and you can walk much of it without needing transport. Keep Galle Road within reach for food and for the short hop back towards Dehiwala when you have had enough sun.
Day three: Look outward. Colombo is close enough that the Colombo Municipal Council area makes an easy half-day extension, and Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte sits just inland if you prefer the administrative capital to the commercial one. For arrivals and departures, Colombo Airport and Ratmalana are the two names to know, and Kalubowila, with the Colombo South Teaching Hospital, is a useful landmark on the inland side of the Galle Road corridor. The wider Colombo Metropolitan Region is compact, so a single day can cover a lot if you plan around the traffic.
