Petropavl
Introduction
Petropavl is a city on the Ishim River in northern Kazakhstan, sitting close to the border with Russia. It serves as the capital of the North Kazakhstan Region, and is also known in Kazakh as Kyzylzhar.
When to go
Petropavl has a dry continental climate, so your trip will be shaped by sharp swings between a long frosty winter and a quite hot summer, with short clear springs and autumns in between.
- Spring: Clear, dry weather with plenty of sunny days makes this a bright, pleasant stretch for walking and sightseeing before the summer heat sets in.
- Summer: Expect the warmest conditions of the year and the busiest outdoor season, mostly clear and dry, though in some years rain can range from rare to a cloudy, rainy season.
- Autumn: Beginning in August or September, autumn starts clear and turns cloudier through October and November as the skies grow greyer and the weather deteriorates toward winter.
- Winter: Frosty and long, lasting more than five months, with stable snow cover and predominantly clear weather, though some years bring infrequent snowstorms and blizzards. Conditions are cold and snowy, and the visitor season is quiet.
Three days in Petropavl
Day one: Start in Petropavl, the city on the Ishim River in the North Kazakhstan Region, close to the border with Russia. Get your bearings along the river, which shapes the layout of the city and gives you a natural line to follow as you walk. As evening comes, settle into the rhythm of a Kazakh city in the north of Kazakhstan.
Day two: Head out to Kyzylzhar to see a different side of the area around Petropavl. Spring and summer are the easiest seasons for time outdoors here, while autumn brings the beginning of the colder turn. Expect clear days to make the most of the surroundings.
Day three: Use your last day to take in Petropavl at an unhurried pace. From August through November the weather shifts noticeably, and winter arrives frosty, so conditions shape what you can do. It is a place where the seasons set the tone, and the Ishim River remains the constant through the year.
