Donghae City
Introduction
Donghae is a city in Gangwon, South Korea, set on the coast and served by two major ports, Donghae Harbor and Mukho Harbor. It sits on the Yeongdong Line railroad and the Donghae Expressway, so you can reach it by train or by road.
The surrounding area is known for its caverns, which are found in Donghae as well as in neighboring Samcheok. Hanzhong University was located here.
Getting around
Buses do most of the work in Donghae, and for visitors they beat the train: rail service is infrequent and doesn't reach many of the places you'll actually want to see, so treat the Yeongdong Line as a scenic option or a fallback rather than your primary way around. Local city buses cover the city well, but service thins out after early evening, so build your day around the schedule and finish sightseeing before then. Keep small change or a transit card handy for the base fare, and note the night surcharge if you're out late. For Mureung Valley, look for a city bus numbered 12-something (12-4, for example). There's no metro or tram network, so buses and taxis are your local options.
Taxis fill the gaps the buses leave, particularly in the evening and for short hops that aren't worth a wait — the intercity bus terminal, about a 20-minute walk north of downtown, is roughly a 5-minute cab ride. If you're based downtown, much is walkable, with the two rail stations on either side of the centre — Donghae Station to the south, Mukho Station to the north — though the mountainous terrain means you should expect some hills. Arriving overland, you'll most likely land at the intercity bus terminal, which has frequent services to Seoul's Express Bus Terminal, less frequent ones to Dong Seoul, and departures every 10 minutes for Gangneung.
Three days in Donghae City
Day one: Arrive in Donghae City and get your bearings around the harbours. Donghae Harbor and Mukho Harbor are the anchors of the city, so start there and take in the working waterfront before wandering into the surrounding neighbourhoods. If you arrive by train, Donghae Station and Mukho Station put you close to the action; if you come by bus, services from Seoul Express Bus Terminal and Dong Seoul run to the city. Local buses and taxis make it easy to move between the harbours and your base for the evening.
Day two: Head inland for Mureung Valley, the natural escape within reach of the city. Buses and taxis serve the valley, so you can plan a full day there without a car. Keep your timing flexible and return to Donghae in the evening for a meal near the harbour.
Day three: Use your last day to explore the wider area. The Yeongdong Line and the Donghae Expressway connect Donghae with Gangwon destinations such as Samcheok and Gangneung, making a short onward trip straightforward. If you are departing, Donghae Station and Mukho Station are your rail links, and buses back toward Seoul Express Bus Terminal and Dong Seoul are available for the return journey.
