Kaech'on

Introduction

Kaech'ŏn, also written Kaechon, is a city in South P'yŏngan province, North Korea. It sits within the country's western interior, in a province that lies south of the Yalu River border with China.

Getting around

Getting around Kaech'ŏn is not something you arrange for yourself. Independent travel is not the norm in North Korea, and your movement will be pre-arranged by your tour company, usually by minibus or train, with transport costs typically folded into the package price. Expect to be accompanied by guides throughout, and do not plan on splitting off to explore on your own. Two restrictions are worth internalising before you arrive: taxi services are not provided to tourists, and foreign guests are not allowed to rent cars. Treat your tour vehicle as your transport network.

Kaech'ŏn has no subway and no tram line — only Pyongyang has a metro, and Chongjin is the only other city in the country with trams. Buses, both local and long-distance, are the backbone of everyday movement here, supplemented by unofficial minibuses and trucks, but public transport is not set up for independent foreign use; if a bus journey is part of your programme, your guides will arrange it. The city sits on the national rail network, served by the Kaech'ŏn Line and the Manp'o Line along with the secondary Choyang Colliery and Chunhyŏk lines, so a rail segment may feature in your itinerary — but the network is freight-dominated and power supply problems cause frequent delays, so build flexibility into your expectations. Walking is how many residents of smaller towns get around, and Kaech'ŏn fits that pattern, but for visitors a walking element depends entirely on your operator and guides; if one is arranged, stay with the group and follow your guides' lead. Kaech'ŏn has no international airport of its own, so you will almost certainly arrive via Beijing, by a roughly 24-hour train or a short Air Koryo flight to Pyongyang, with onward travel to the city organised as part of your tour.

Three days in Kaech'on

Day one: Begin in Kaech'on, a city in the South of North Korea, and orient yourself with a walk through its central districts. Getting around is straightforward if you expect limited options: buses and the rail line connect the city to Pyongyang and Chongjin, while the Yalu River and the border with China lie within reach of the wider region. Treat your first day as a chance to settle in and observe daily life rather than to rush between sights.

Day two: Head out to Choyang Colliery, one of the industrial sites associated with the area, and take in the working landscape around it. Independent travel here is restricted, so you will likely move with a guide and a fixed schedule. If your itinerary allows, a stop at Chunhyŏk fits naturally into the same day, and walking the streets between stops gives you a sense of the city's rhythm.

Day three: Use your final day for the places you have not yet reached. Manp'o lies nearby and can be visited as part of a longer route, while Beijing and Air Koryo are the usual points of connection for onward travel. Two or three days is enough to see Kaech'on at an unhurried pace, but expect formalities and checkpoints to shape how much you can do in a single day.
