Thika

Introduction

Thika is an industrial town and commerce hub in Kiambu County, Kenya, set on the A2 road northeast of Nairobi near the confluence of the Thika and Chania Rivers. The town proper lies in Kiambu County, while the greater Thika area — including residential areas such as Bendor estate, Maporomoko, Thika Greens, Thika Golden Pearl, Bahati Ridge and Thika Sports Golf Club — falls within Murang'a County.

The town sits at an elevation of roughly 1,631 metres and is growing rapidly, so expect a busy, working city rather than a resort stop.

Getting around

Thika sits on the A2 road northeast of Nairobi, on a gentle plain before the land rises into the central highlands, and it is served externally by an eight-lane superhighway, highways toward Garissa and the highlands, and a railway line. In practice, though, do not plan around rail: the town's railway station has only limited passenger service and only cargo trains operate, with no metro or tram network and light rail still only a proposal. Arriving from Nairobi means coming overland along the superhighway corridor by bus, matatu or taxi, and since fares and schedules vary, agree on the fare before you set off and confirm your destination with the driver.

Once in town, walking is a reasonable way to cover short distances, since Thika has a well-maintained internal road network, and bicycles are used for market and work trips. For longer hops across town or when carrying bags, take a tuk-tuk or a matatu. Matatus run from matatu stages, where vans wait until full and recruiters sometimes grab arms to get attention; agree on the fare before boarding, pay about halfway through the trip, and flick the ceiling twice to signal you want to get off. They hold roughly fifteen seats but wooden planks are sometimes laid across the aisle, so a window seat away from the door is preferable, and matatus belonging to larger lines tend to have consistent fares and a better reputation. Tuk-tuks cost more than matatus because you pay for privacy, and you flag them down like a matatu, state your destination and pay at the end. Motorbike taxis, known as pikipiki or bodaboda, are versatile on dirt roads and relatively fast, but accidents are not uncommon and few drivers wear helmets, so weigh this mode carefully. The source material does not describe a dedicated ride-hailing app scene in Thika, so plan around the modes above.

When to go

Thika has a subtropical highland climate and enjoys sunshine for most of the year, so you can plan a visit in almost any season. The hottest stretch comes in March and April, just before the long rains, when the heat peaks and the wetter months begin. The long rains fall from around March or April through May and June, so if you travel then, expect wet conditions and be ready to plan around the downpours.

July is the coolest month, with milder days than the rest of the year, though sunshine remains common. Later in the year, the short rains arrive from October to November or December, making this a wetter stretch with rain coming in the later months. If you prefer drier, sunnier conditions, aim for the periods outside these two rainy seasons.

Three days in Thika

Day one: Arriving in Thika, in Kiambu County, Kenya, you will find the town sits close to Nairobi and is crossed by the Chania Rivers. Once you have settled, take your bearings along the river, then head out to the Bendor and Maporomoko areas to see how the town spreads around its water and its green edges. For getting about, matatus, tuk tuks and motorbike taxis are the usual ways to move, so you can cover ground quickly without a car.

Day two: Give the day to Thika's greener side. Thika Greens, Thika Golden Pearl and Bahati Ridge show the planned, open character of the town's outskirts, and a round or a walk at Thika Sports Golf Club fits the same mood. The weather is warm for much of the year, with the long rains falling around March, April, May and June and the short rains later, in October, November and December, so plan outdoor time around those wetter stretches.

Day three: Look beyond Thika itself. Murang County lies to the north and Garissa County away to the east, both reachable from the town, and Nairobi is close enough for a half-day trip. If you would rather stay local, spend the time revisiting the Chania Rivers and the neighbourhoods you liked best before you leave.
