Tottori-shi

Getting around

Tottori-shi is compact and manageable, and most trips follow a simple pattern: use rail and bus to reach a district or attraction, then explore on foot. There is no metro system to navigate. Tottori Station is the anchor for rail travel and the main gateway for onward buses, so base yourself near it. Rail, operated by JR-West, is how you arrive in the city and how you connect to other towns along the coast; local movement within the city and out to the dunes is handled mainly by bus.

Buses are the workhorse of local transport and the recommended way to reach the Tottori Sand Dunes, which sit just outside the urban core. From the Tottori Station bus terminal, take the "Iwami-Iwai Line" or the "Sakyu Line"; the journey takes roughly twenty minutes. Get off at "Sakyu-kaikan" or "Sakyu-Higashiguchi." The route is served by Nihon-kotsu and Hinomaru Bus, and express services to the dunes area are also listed by both operators if you are coming from further afield. Timetables vary by operator and season, so check the current schedule before setting out, especially for an early or late visit; tickets are bought on boarding or through the operator's usual arrangements, easiest sorted at the station bus terminal. Taxis are a straightforward fallback for short hops, late arrivals, or when bus timings do not suit, and are handy for the final stretch to the dunes if you miss a bus, though the bus is the more economical and better-documented option. Ride-hailing is not a major part of the transport mix, so plan around taxis and buses. Central Tottori-shi is walkable, and at the dunes the experience is entirely on foot: they are part of San'in Kaigan National Park with no entrance gate or admission fee, so you can simply walk in, though sand graffiti or writing messages on the dunes is prohibited by ordinance. Wi-Fi is available at the visitor centre ("National_Park_Wi-Fi", login required) and near the dunes entrance stairs and chairlift ("Tottori_BB_01", thirty minutes, account registration), and there is a restroom at the parking lot, including an ostomate sink unit. If you fly in, a limousine bus links Tottori Airport, served by ANA flights from Haneda, directly to Tottori Station. By car, the dunes area is roughly twenty minutes from Tottori Interchange on the Tottori Expressway; there is no dedicated parking at the visitor centre, so use the "Tottori Sand Dunes Parking Lot" in front of it, charged per twenty-four hours with separate rates for cars, minibuses, large buses and motorbikes, and no admission restrictions, so parking is available early in the morning and at night.

Three days in Tottori-shi

Day one: Arrive at Tottori Station by JR from the west, then use buses or taxis to reach the Tottori Sand Dunes. From the station, the Sakyu Line gets you to the dunes; the Iwami Iwai Line also serves the area. Get off at Sakyu Higashiguchi, where Nihon Hinomaru Bus timetables apply. Ride into Central Tottori and the San Kaigan National Park. Wi-Fi is available if you need it.

Day two: If you fly, Tottori Airport has ANA flights from Haneda. By car, take the Tottori Interchange on the Tottori Expressway, then use the Tottori Sand Dunes Parking Lot. Spend the day around the dunes and the national park.

Day three: Return to Tottori Station and continue by rail. Buses and taxis remain your options for the dunes and Central Tottori before you leave.
