Fuchu
Introduction
Fuchū is a city in the western portion of the Tokyo Metropolis, positioned as a regional commercial center and a commuter town for people who work in central Tokyo. Its economy leans on large-scale manufacturing, with facilities for Toshiba, NEC and Suntory, alongside the Bank of Japan's main computer operations center.
For visitors, the draw is largely sporting. The Tokyo Racecourse is here, as are the training grounds of the Top League rugby teams Toshiba Brave Lupus and Suntory Sungoliath.
Three days in Fuchu
Day one: Start by getting your bearings in Fuchu, a city within Tokyo Metropolis. Its position within Tokyo makes it an easy base for exploring the wider area, and the city itself rewards a slow first day. Begin with the Tokyo Racecourse, the city's best-known landmark and a major draw for visitors and locals alike.
Day two: Turn to Fuchu's sporting identity. The city is associated with Top League rugby, and two of its teams are the Toshiba Brave Lupus and the Suntory Sungoliath. Catching a match, or simply following the local rugby culture, gives you a different angle on the city than the racecourse does.
Day three: Round out your stay by looking at Fuchu's corporate side. Toshiba, NEC, Suntory and Bank of Japan all have a presence connected to the city, reflecting its role within Tokyo Metropolis and the wider Tokyo economy. Use your final day to wander and see how these threads - sport, industry and everyday city life - sit together.
