Iida

Introduction

Iida is a city in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, set within a large municipal area that stretches across roughly 659 square kilometres of the prefecture. It is an environmental model city, a designation given by the Japanese government to municipalities chosen to serve as models for making large cuts in greenhouse gas emissions on the way to a low-carbon society.

Getting around

Iida's central area is compact enough to cover on foot, and walking is a genuinely practical way to get around the middle of the city. For anything beyond a comfortable stroll, rental bicycles are available around town and let you range a little further without waiting for a bus. Between walking and a rented bicycle, you can handle most day-to-day movement without any other transport.

For local trips beyond walking distance, Shinnan Bus operates the city's bus network. Taxis are generally available for short journeys and for connections the buses don't cover conveniently, but don't count on app-based ride-hailing being widely available. If you're arriving by road, the Chuo Expressway passes near the city with an exit at Iida IC.

Three days in Iida

Day one: Start in Iida itself, getting your bearings in this city of Nagano Prefecture, Japan. Use the local transport options to move around — Shinnan Bus serves the area, and taxis are available if you prefer door-to-door travel. If you arrive by road, the Chuo Expressway brings you in via the Iida IC.

Day two: Continue exploring Iida at an easy pace, letting the city's streets set the rhythm of your day. Between stops, rely on the bus or a taxi to cover ground, and keep the Iida IC in mind if you plan to drive onward along the Chuo Expressway.

Day three: Spend your final day revisiting the parts of Iida you enjoyed most, or filling in anything you missed. Shinnan Bus and taxis make it simple to reach your last stops before you leave, whether you head out via the Chuo Expressway from the Iida IC or continue elsewhere in Nagano Prefecture.
