Bojnurd

Introduction

Bojnord is the capital of North Khorasan province in Iran, and it also serves as the seat of Bojnord County and its Central District. The city sits roughly 701 kilometres from Tehran and about 242 kilometres from Mashhad, the capital of neighbouring Razavi Khorasan province, which makes it a natural stop for travellers moving between those two major centres.

Getting around

Bojnurd has no railway connection and no train station, and there is no metro or tram network, so getting around the city and travelling onward both rely on road transport. Local buses do run, but the routes can be complicated for visitors to use without Persian. Taxis are the more convenient option: hail a yellow or green car on the street, or ask your hotel reception to arrange one, which is often the least stressful approach if you don't speak Persian. International ride-hailing apps don't operate here, though local equivalents exist. Wherever you're headed, have your destination written in Persian and confirm the fare and the currency unit before setting off — prices are often quoted in tomans while the rial is official, and international Visa and Mastercard are not accepted, so carry cash in USD or EUR to exchange.

Bojnurd's central areas are navigable on foot for short trips, but treat walking as a way to cover nearby errands and neighbourhood streets rather than to cross the whole city. The parks Baba-Aman and Besh-Gardash are popular on Fridays, the weekend, when families gather for picnics, and a leisurely walk fits naturally into a visit there. If you walk, respect the local dress code: women are expected to wear a headscarf (rousari) and loose clothing covering the hips (manteau or tunic), and men should not wear shorts. Avoid photographing government buildings, military sites and police, and avoid public displays of affection. Bojnurd's own airport (BJB) is a small regional hub, mainly served from Tehran, and the practical way into the city is by taxi, either from the street or arranged in advance through your hotel. Alternatively, fly into Mashhad (MHD), a major international hub, and continue overland by intercity bus or taxi — a leg of a few hours. Intercity buses are generally comfortable, with air conditioning and reclining seats; the route from Mashhad along a modern highway is the most popular and regular, while the approach from Gorgan is longer and more scenic through green foothills and forest. If you want to include rail in a wider itinerary, the nearest practical hubs are Mashhad and Gorgan, reached by bus or taxi. Plan your onward transport before you arrive.

Three days in Bojnurd

Day one: Start in Bojnord, the capital of North Khorasan in northeastern Iran, and use it as your base for exploring Bojnord County and the wider Central District. Take a local taxi to get your bearings, and keep in mind that taxis are the practical way to move around. If you arrive by air, BJB serves Bojnurd, while MHD in Mashhad, over in Razavi Khorasan, is another option; alternatively, intercity buses connect Bojnord with Tehran, Mashhad and Gorgan. Wherever you start, sort out your visa before travelling, and plan to carry cash in USD or EUR, since international cards such as Mastercard are not reliable here.

Day two: Settle into the local rhythm and the Persian character of the city. Fridays are the local weekend, so expect a different pace then; if you want to avoid quiet streets and closed businesses, plan around it. Sample the local food and drink that carry the names Baba, Aman, Besh and Gardash, and let the city's everyday life set your schedule rather than a checklist of sights.

Day three: Use Bojnord as a launch point for the wider region. The Central District and Bojnord County reward slow travel, and the surrounding North Khorasan landscape is best seen with a local taxi at your disposal. If you are heading onward, intercity services run to Mashhad in Razavi Khorasan, to Gorgan, and to Tehran, and BJB or MHD can handle your departure. Plan your visa and cash needs before you leave, and keep the trip simple.
