Gonbad-e Kavus

Introduction

Gonbad-e Kabus is a city in the Central District of Gonbad-e Kavus County, in Iran's Golestan province. It serves as the capital of both the county and the district, which makes it the administrative centre for the surrounding area.

Getting around

Gonbad-e Kavus is compact and largely flat, so central areas and the main sight, the brick Tomb of Qabus, are comfortably reachable on foot. For longer hops across town, taxis are the main motorised option, readily available for point-to-point trips, while shared taxis (savari) are inexpensive, fill up as they go and serve common routes. There is no metro, tram or urban rail network of any kind, and no ticketing system, pass or travel card to arrange — you simply pay the driver in cash for each trip.

Fares are quoted in Iranian Rials, though locals often speak in Tomans (1 Toman equals 10 Rials), so clarify which unit is meant before agreeing a price. Foreign bank cards are not accepted anywhere, so carry enough cash for your journeys. English is not widely spoken, and having your destination written in Persian script will help with drivers.

Three days in Gonbad-e Kavus

Day one: Start in Gonbad, the town at the heart of the Central District of Kavus County in Golestan, and get your bearings in the streets around the centre. Make your first stop the Tomb of Qabus, the landmark the town is known for, and take your time with it rather than rushing past. In the evening, settle into the local pace and try the food of the region; keep some Iranian Rials or Tomans on hand, since prices may be quoted in either.

Day two: Stay close to Gonbad and use the day to look around the Central District at a slower pace, returning to the Tomb of Qabus if you want a second, quieter look. Carry cash in Rials or Tomans for everyday purchases, and ask in Persian where English is not spoken; foreign visitors are often helped along by locals. Keep the afternoon loose so you can follow whatever the town offers that day.

Day three: Spend your last day in and around Gonbad, filling any gaps left from the first two days and revisiting the parts of the Central District you liked most. Before you leave, sort out your Rials and Tomans and confirm your onward plans. If you have time, a final pass by the Tomb of Qabus makes a fitting close to the stay.
