Marand

Introduction

Marand is a city in the Central District of Marand County, in East Azerbaijan province, Iran. It serves as the capital of both the county and the district, which makes it the administrative centre for the surrounding area.

Getting around

Marand is compact and walkable, so the simplest way to cover the centre is on foot — shops, cafés and local landmarks are within easy reach, and walking gives you the best feel for the city's character. Comfortable shoes and awareness of local dress norms will serve you well. There is no metro or tram network, so for public transport within the city you rely on buses and taxis.

Buses are the main form of public transport and serve nearly all routes; formalities are minimal, and you generally just need a ticket. Be aware that buses are not designed with accessibility in mind — they typically lack facilities for disabled passengers and have several doorsteps, which can make boarding awkward with limited mobility or heavy luggage. Taxis are widely available and convenient for places beyond walking distance or for reaching the bus or rail station with luggage; drivers generally expect cash in rials rather than euros or dollars. Ride-hailing apps such as Snapp and Tap30 operate in major Iranian cities including Tabriz, but in Marand itself the most reliable approach is to use local taxis. For longer journeys, Marand lies on the rail corridor linking the region with Tabriz and onward toward Tehran — check schedules and buy tickets in advance, as services can fill up. Marand has no major international airport of its own; Tabriz is the regional gateway, and from there the most practical way to reach Marand is by road or rail, with taxis also an option.

Three days in Marand

Day one: Start in Marand itself, in the Central District of Marand County in East Azerbaijan, Iran. It is a comfortable base for exploring the surrounding area, and you can spend your first day getting oriented in the city before planning trips further afield.

Day two: Use Marand as your starting point for a day trip to Tabriz. Buses and taxis are available, and you can ride with Snapp, the Iranian ride-hailing service, to get around. Return to Marand in the evening.

Day three: Take a longer excursion to Tehran if your schedule allows, or spend the day exploring more of Marand and the Central District. Buses and taxis connect the towns, and Snapp is an option for getting around locally.
