Lahijan
Introduction
Lahijan sits in Gilan province in northwestern Iran, close to the Caspian Sea, and serves as the capital of both Lahijan County and its Central District. Use the city as a base for exploring this part of the Caspian coast.Getting around
Lahijan has no rail, metro, tram or airport of its own, so getting around comes down to walking, taxis and intercity buses. The centre is compact and its blend of traditional and modern architecture makes the central streets and bazaar areas pleasant to explore on foot; walking is the most practical way to reach the bazaar and the tea-related attractions. Bring rain protection, as rainfall here is heavy and prolonged, and dress for damp, changeable weather — the climate is humid and can be windy, with occasional near-blizzard conditions in winter. Late summer and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for exploring on foot.
- Taxis are the backbone of local transport: available throughout the city, they are the standard way to cover distances beyond a comfortable walk, reach the bus terminal, and make day trips to nearby sights such as Chamkhaleh beach (about a 30-minute drive) and Soostan Lagoon southeast of the city. Agree on the fare or confirm the meter before setting off.
- There is no city bus network for visitors; intercity buses use the terminal on Toheed East Highway, and tickets are bought at the terminal or through the operator for your route — there is no city-wide transit pass.
- For rail, head to Rasht, where the station sits near Razi Square toward Jirdeh Road, then continue to Lahijan by road; taxis also link the city with Rasht Airport on Valiasr Boulevard, roughly 44 km away.
- Carry cash in Iranian rial for fares and small purchases, and keep small notes handy for modest fees at activities such as the gondola lift and zip line at Sheytan Kuh.
- Plan around the weather: the humid, rainy climate means outdoor plans are best kept flexible, and the city works well as a base for Sheytan Kuh, Bam-e Sabz, the Sheikh Zahed Gilani Shrine, Lahijan Pool and the Tea History Museum.
When to go
Lahijan has a humid Hyrcanian climate with rain at every time of year, so pack for wet weather whenever you visit. Autumn is the wettest stretch, when the atmosphere is at its most unstable and heavy, prolonged rainfall is common; expect a very green, damp landscape and plan on rain most days.
Winter is milder here than elsewhere in Gilan, and freezing temperatures are seldom reported on the coast, though Lahijan can still see periods of near-blizzard conditions, with rain arriving on north-westerly winds bearing vapor. Early spring brings rainfall at a medium level, with vapor-bearing winds from the east and conditions milder and less wet than the autumn peak. Summer is the driest part of the year, though the climate stays humid and green; summers are cooler than elsewhere in Gilan, and rain comes on westerly winds.
Three days in Lahijan
Day one: Start in Lahijan itself, getting your bearings along Valiasr Boulevard and Razi Square, where you can arrange taxis for the days ahead. Plan a gentle introduction with the Sheikh Zahed Gilani Shrine and the Tea History Museum, then take in Lahijan Pool. In the evening, eat in the Central District of Lahijan County, trying local dishes such as Bam and Sabz.
- Valiasr Boulevard and Razi Square for orientation and taxis
- Sheikh Zahed Gilani Shrine, Tea History Museum, Lahijan Pool
- Dinner in the Central District; try Bam and Sabz
Day two: Head out of the city toward Sheytan Kuh for walking and views, then continue to Soostan Lagoon to watch the water and birdlife. Carry water and snacks, and agree on a pickup time with your driver before setting out. Late in the day, return to Lahijan for a quiet evening.
- Sheytan Kuh for walking and views
- Soostan Lagoon for water and birdlife
- Agree a pickup time with your driver in advance
Day three: Take a taxi to Chamkhaleh on the Caspian Sea for a few hours by the shore, then return via the Toheed East Highway. If you are continuing to Rasht, the highway and Jirdeh Road connect you onward, and Rasht Airport serves departures from Gilan. In autumn and winter, bring warm layers; summer is warm and humid, so early starts suit the coast best.
- Chamkhaleh on the Caspian Sea
- Toheed East Highway and Jirdeh Road toward Rasht
- Rasht Airport for onward departures
