Zabol
Introduction
Zabol is a city in the Central District of Zabol County, in Iran's Sistan and Baluchestan province, and serves as the capital of both the county and the district. It sits close to the border with Afghanistan, in the far east of the country.
When to go
Zabol has a hot desert climate, so the year is shaped by intense heat and very dry conditions. Summer is the hottest stretch, with strong sun and arid conditions; expect demanding heat and plan your activity around it rather than through the middle of the day.
Winter brings the coolest conditions of the year and relief from the desert heat. Days are more comfortable for being outdoors, though the setting remains dry.
Three days in Zabol
Day one: Start in Zabol, the city at the heart of Zabol County in Sistan and Baluchestan, and get your bearings in the Central District. Use the day to settle into the rhythm of the city and its bazaar, and to adjust to the climate, which is warm and dry in summer and can turn bitterly cold in winter.
Day two: Look outward from the city toward the wider region. Zabol sits in Sistan, close to the border with Afghanistan, and the surrounding country is shaped by the wind and the dry plains. Spend the day understanding how the seasons govern life here, with summer heat and winter cold setting the pace of work and travel.
Day three: Give the day to the city itself and to the people of Zabol County. Days pass slowly in the Central District, and the best way to close your stay is to revisit the parts of Zabol you liked most, taking in the everyday life of Sistan and Baluchestan before you leave Iran.
