Al Hindiyah
Introduction
Al-Hindiya sits on the Euphrates River in Iraq's Karbala Governorate, where it serves as the seat of Al-Hindiya District. The city was once known as Tuwairij, and that older name lives on in the Tuwairij run, held here each year as part of the Mourning of Muharram on the Day of Ashura.
If your visit coincides with Ashura, expect the city to be absorbed in commemoration; at other times it is a riverside stop in the governorate, its identity tied to the Euphrates and to the annual observance that carries its former name.
Getting around
Getting around Al-Hindiya happens by road. There is no rail, metro or tram network serving the city, and no airport of its own, so you should plan on minibuses, a car, or your own two feet. The workhorse of local movement is the Russian-made RAF minibus, first imported to Iraq in 1974 and still carrying passengers today. They run within the city and across parts of Karbala province, and they also connect Al-Hindiya with surrounding districts and villages. Fares are low, so carry small-denomination cash and pay the driver or conductor as you board. Don't count on modern signage, timetables or official stops: you flag one down, get on, and ride. Many of the vehicles have been mechanically upgraded and are kept running by their drivers, even though Iraqi regulations bar registering buses older than 30 years, so they are formally considered out of service while continuing to operate daily.
Beyond the minibuses, there is no formal public transport network, no ticketing system and no transit pass to buy. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are not documented here, so don't assume you can summon a car by phone; the realistic options are the shared minibuses and whatever car or driver arrangements you can make on the ground, for example through your accommodation. If you are in the city around Ashura, when the Tuwairij run is held as part of the Mourning of Muharram, expect large crowds and heavy demand on local transport; at other times the minibuses are the straightforward way to get around.
Three days in Al Hindiyah
Day one: Start in central Al Hindiyah and get your bearings along the Euphrates River, which shapes the town and the surrounding Hindiya District. Take your time walking the riverside and watching the water that gives the area its character. In the evening, ask locally about the Tuwairij Mourning, the Muharram and Ashura observances that draw Iraqi visitors to this part of Karbala Governorate.

Day two: Use the town as your base for exploring the wider Hindiya District in Karbala Governorate. The Euphrates is the thread that ties the area together, so plan your day around it rather than rushing between stops. If you want to go further afield, taxis are the practical way to reach places beyond central Al Hindiyah.

Day three: Give the morning to the river again before turning your attention toward Karbala, the city that anchors the governorate. Many Iraqi visitors come to this region for the Muharram and Ashura season, so time your visit with that in mind if it interests you. Getting there is straightforward by road, and taxis can cover the last stretch into central Al Hindiyah.
