Simele

Introduction

Simele (also spelled Semel) is a town in the Dohuk province of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, sitting on the main road that links the region to neighbouring Turkey. It lies just west of Dohuk, making it a natural stop for travellers moving along that route.

Three days in Simele

Day one: Start in Simele itself, known in Kurdish as Semel, and get your bearings in this town of the Kurdistan Region in Iraq. Use the day to settle in and take in the everyday life of the town before planning the rest of your stay.

Day two: Head to Dohuk, the larger city in the Kurdistan Region, for a change of pace and a wider look at the area. Return to Simele in the evening.

Day three: Spend your last day in and around Simele, revisiting the parts of Semel you liked most. If your travels continue onward, the region's position near Turkey and the rest of Iraq makes it a natural stopping point before you move on.
