Kashipur

Introduction

Kashipur is a city in Udham Singh Nagar district in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, and one of the district's seven subdivisions. It sits in the western part of the district, in the Kumaun region, and was known in ancient times as Govisana. The city is also home to IIM Kashipur, one of the Indian Institutes of Management established during the Eleventh Five-year Plan.

Getting around

Kashipur has no metro, tram or local rail network, so you get around town by auto-rickshaw, taxi or local bus. Local buses are the cheapest way to cover short hops, while auto-rickshaws fill the same short-trip role at lower cost than a taxi. Taxis are the most practical choice for point-to-point trips, for reaching the airport or an out-of-town railhead, and for any journey where you are carrying luggage. Walking works for short errands and moving between nearby spots, but it is not a realistic way to cover the longer regional legs.

Kashipur Railway Station is the town's railhead and is well connected, serving many trains. If your plans don't line up with services into Kashipur, Kathgodam and Haldwani work as alternative railheads, both reached from Kashipur by taxi or bus — treat them as backup gateways rather than part of a single seamless rail trip. Regional buses connect Kashipur with Haldwani, Nainital and Delhi, including a direct bus from Delhi if you are arriving overland from the capital. The nearest airport is Pantnagar Airport (PGH); from there you continue to Kashipur by taxi or by bus, so decide in advance whether you want a direct, door-to-door taxi transfer or a cheaper but less flexible bus. Buses are also an option for the onward leg from the Kathgodam and Haldwani railheads.

Three days in Kashipur

Day one: Start in Kashipur itself, in Udham Singh Nagar district of Uttarakhand, and get your bearings on foot through the town centre. Local taxis and walking will cover most of what you want to see, and the town’s identity is bound up with its history as Govisana, so ask locally about the old sites rather than expecting a single monument. Kashipur Railway Station is your arrival point if you come by train, and the town works well as a base for the days ahead.

Day two: Head out to the wider Kumaun region. Kathgodam and Haldwani are the transport hubs for this part of Uttarakhand, and Nainital is the classic hill destination within reach; buses and local taxis connect the towns. If you are arriving by air, Pantnagar Airport serves the region. Keep the day flexible, since hill travel takes time.

Day three: Give the morning to Kashipur’s academic side, with IIM Kashipur, one of the Indian Institutes of Management established under the Eleventh Five Year Plan, shaping the town’s newer character. Then plan your onward journey: trains from Kashipur Railway Station, buses toward Delhi, or a taxi to Kathgodam or Haldwani for connections. Confirm timings locally before you set out.
