Chirmiri

Introduction

Chirmiri is a hill station city and municipal corporation in the Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur district of Chhattisgarh, India. Until the creation of that separate district in August 2021, it was part of Koriya district. The city is best known for coal extraction, as the surrounding area is rich in coal.

Getting around

Chirmiri has no conventional local transport: no taxis, no auto-rickshaws and no app-based ride-hailing. Attempts at formal public transport did not last — auto-rickshaws could not manage the sharp climbs, and city buses introduced under a government project stopped running within a few years because the roads damaged the vehicles. There is also no metro or tram network, so there are no tickets or passes of that kind to buy. What works instead is an informal custom of free lifts: you stand by the roadside, raise a hand, and a passing jeep driver, motorcyclist or ordinary resident may stop and offer you a ride at no charge. This is a long-standing local practice used routinely by students, shopkeepers, the elderly going to market and schoolchildren, and it grew out of the coal-mining era when few workers owned even scooters. Jeeps are the main vehicle on the roads because they suit the rocky, uneven terrain.

Three days in Chirmiri

Day one: Start in Chirmiri itself, getting your bearings in this Chhattisgarh town before heading out into the surrounding Koriya district. Treat the day as a gentle introduction rather than a checklist, and ask locally about how to arrange transport for the days ahead.

Day two: Plan a longer excursion toward Manendragarh, using jeeps where the roads call for them. Attempts to reach more remote corners depend on conditions, so build some flexibility into the day and be prepared to adjust.

Day three: Use your final day to slow down and revisit what you enjoyed most around Chirmiri and Bharatpur. Until you leave, keep the pace easy and confirm your onward travel in advance.
