Bulandshahr

Introduction

Bulandshahr, formerly known as Baran, is a city and a municipal board in the Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh, India. It sits within the state's northern plains, and its older name, Baran, still echoes through the district that shares its name.

Getting around

Within Bulandshahr itself, getting around is almost entirely road-based. Auto-rickshaws are the most common option: they usually carry four to six passengers on shared runs, though you can reserve one privately, in which case expect to bargain. Fixed rates apply on certain routes. Cycle rickshaws cover shorter trips on a budget, and local buses are likewise budget-friendly, with both AC and non-AC services. Taxis are the second most popular mode after auto-rickshaws, connecting the city to nearby towns and villages; they can be booked by phone or through travel agents, some run on a sharing basis, some operate as shuttle taxis with fixed prices on fixed routes, and some run around the clock. Motorbikes and scooters are what locals themselves use — cheap, readily available and handy in congested traffic. There is no metro or tram network, and the source does not describe Bulandshahr as a specifically walkable city, so plan on rickshaws, auto-rickshaws or taxis for covering ground and reaching landmarks, reserving walking for the immediate area where you are staying.

For arriving and leaving, the railway station on SH 18 Bypass Road is served by trains including the Sangam Express, the Khurja–Meerut passenger, the KRJ–Allahabad service and the Bulandshahr–Nizamuddin passenger, linking the city within Uttar Pradesh and to other states. UPSRTC runs Deluxe AC and non-AC buses to major towns and cities, with tickets bookable online in advance, and private operators also serve the city. No airport is identified for Bulandshahr, so if you fly in, the realistic route is to reach the Delhi region first and continue by train, bus or taxi; National Highway 91 connects Delhi to Kanpur via Bulandshahr, and National Highway 235 runs from Meerut. For sightseeing beyond the city, such as boat rides on the Ganga at Anoopshahr, haggling over rental vehicle prices is advised.

Three days in Bulandshahr

Day one: Start in Bulandshahr itself, getting your bearings in the city before heading out. Within Bulandshahr you can move around by auto, cycle or motorbike, and fixed-rate taxis are also available if you prefer to have a car at your disposal. Use the first day to settle in and plan the rest of your trip, since onward travel from here runs through Uttar Pradesh and beyond.

Day two: Head towards Khurja, a short run from Bulandshahr, and continue on to Meerut if you want a larger city for the day. The Sangam Express connects this part of Uttar Pradesh with Allahabad and Nizamuddin, so rail is an option alongside the road. UPSRTC services, including Deluxe AC coaches, cover the routes towards Delhi, while the National Highway towards Kanpur carries you in the opposite direction.

Day three: Take the SH Bypass Road out towards Anoopshahr, which sits on the Ganga. If you are continuing your journey, KRJ is the station to know for connections, and the road and rail links through Meerut and Delhi make it easy to move on. Keep the day flexible, using auto, cycle or motorbike for short hops and AC taxis for longer stretches.
