Guna

Introduction

Guna is a city and municipality in Madhya Pradesh, and the administrative headquarters of Guna District under Gwalior Division. It sits on the banks of the Parbati river, and that riverside setting is the defining feature of the place.

Getting around

Guna has no metro or tram network, so getting around depends on road transport and trains for longer journeys. Guna Junction railway station is the main rail gateway and sits right in the city rather than on its outskirts, on the Kota–Bina route served by trains such as the Bina–Guna Passenger, the Gwalior–Indore Express, the Gwalior–Bhopal Intercity Express, the Sabarmati Express and the Bina–Ratlam via Nagda Passenger. For road travel, the bus terminal on the Agra–Mumbai National Highway (NH-3) is the district's main hub, with government and private services connecting Guna to Bhopal, Vidisha, Rajgarh, Kota, Shivpuri, Jhalawar and other parts of Madhya Pradesh. Comfort varies with the fare and service you pick, and Volvo air-conditioned buses are available if you want more comfort on longer routes; buy tickets at the terminal or on the bus.

There is no mention of ride-hailing apps in Guna, so hire cabs locally — for example through your hotel or at the bus and rail terminals — for local trips and onward journeys where bus timings don't suit you. City buses serve the airport, but treat local bus service as basic rather than comprehensive, and for anything beyond a short stroll plan on a bus or a hired cab. Guna Airport is small with only basic amenities and few airlines, so many visitors fly into Bhopal instead and continue by road, using a bus or hired cab; check airport schedules carefully before relying on flying in.

Three days in Guna

Day one: Arrive at Guna Junction, the town's rail hub, where trains such as the Guna Passenger, the Indore Express, the Bhopal Intercity Express, the Sabarmati Express and the Ratlam–Nagda Passenger connect you to Kota, Bina, Gwalior, Bhopal and beyond. Settle into the town itself and use it as your base, getting your bearings along the roads that link Guna to the wider region. If you prefer to fly, Guna Airport serves the town.

Day two: Take the day to explore Guna District, the surrounding area within Gwalior Division. The district's position in Madhya Pradesh puts neighbouring places within reach, including Shivpuri, Rajgarh, Vidisha and Bhopal, while the Parbati river runs through the region. Plan your travel around the rail and road links you already know, and keep the pace easy rather than trying to cover too much.

Day three: Use your last day for the onward journey, whether by train from Guna Junction toward Agra, Kota or Mumbai, or by road along the national highway. Comfortable Volvo coaches are an option for longer road legs. Check your connections in advance so the return fits smoothly around the services available from the town.
