Kishanganj
Introduction
Kishanganj is a city in the Purnia division of Bihar, in eastern India, and serves as the headquarters of its surrounding district. Use it as a straightforward base for understanding this part of the state rather than as a destination with a long list of sights.
Getting around
Within Kishanganj itself, getting around is informal and inexpensive. The everyday modes are shared jeeps, hand-pulled cycle-rickshaws and tongas (horse-drawn carts); auto-rickshaws are also available for nearby trips, and local tempos, jeeps and minibuses serve surrounding locations. You rarely need to plan a journey in advance inside town — flag down what is passing. Agree the fare before you set off, since there is no metered system. Cycle-rickshaws and tongas are the cheapest option and best for short hops; autos make more sense with luggage or for heading a little further out. Walking works well for short errands in the town centre, but the city functions as a highway and rail corridor, and National Highway 31 through it is described as one of the busiest national highways in India — so keep walking to neighbourhood-level trips and switch to a rickshaw, tonga or auto for anything longer or anything involving the highway.
- Kishanganj Railway Station (KNE) anchors long-distance travel, on the Northeast Frontier Railway with routes linking the northeast to West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and major metropolitan cities; several Rajdhani trains and numerous express services halt here despite its small size, and local trains serve the surrounding areas. Other railheads within reach include New Jalpaiguri, Katihar, Barauni, Barsoi and Patna.
- Bihar State Roadways and private buses connect the city with other parts of Bihar and neighbouring states. Intercity buses to nearby cities depart roughly every half hour or less; long-distance services to Patna, Kolkata and Siliguri are most frequent in the morning and evening. Daily AC and non-AC buses run the Siliguri–Patna route via Kishanganj. Tickets are generally bought on boarding, so turn up at the departure point and take the next service.
- For trips to Purnia, Katihar, Araria, Forbesganj, Thakurganj and Bahadurganj, private vehicles are commonly used alongside buses and shared jeeps.
- Taxis and cars can be hired within the district — for example to the tea gardens or the airport — best arranged directly, as no app-based ride-hailing network is described here.
- There is no airport in Kishanganj; the practical air gateway is Bagdogra (IXB) in West Bengal, reached by hired taxi or car, or by rail and road via New Jalpaiguri.
