Ambur

Introduction

Ambur is a major town in the Vellore division of Tamil Nadu, in South India, and it is recognised as one of India's major leather manufacturing and export hubs. Together with its twin town, Vaniyambadi, it forms part of the Vaniyambadi Revenue district, whose finished leather, leather garments and footwear components are shipped directly to international markets including Europe and North America.

For a traveller, that makes Ambur a place defined by its working character rather than by resort trappings: a South Indian town whose rhythms are tied to the leather trade and whose closest urban companion is Vaniyambadi. Come expecting an industrial town in the Vellore division, and plan your time around the twin-town pair rather than Ambur alone.

Getting around

Ambur is compact enough that walking does most of the work for you in the centre: the bus stand, the market streets and the main commercial stretches are all manageable on foot, and it is the easiest way to get a feel for the town. Time your longer walks for the cooler parts of the day and carry water, since summers are hot and the heaviest rain comes with the northeast monsoon in October and November.

For longer journeys, the railway station (coded AB) sits on the Chennai–Bengaluru corridor, with express and superfast trains linking the town to Chennai, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Mysore and Erode; book reserved tickets ahead, especially around holidays. The bus stand, built in 1988, remains the hub for local and long-distance road travel, with frequent services along the Chennai–Jolarpettai line and the Chennai–Bangalore National Expressway, including trips to neighbouring Vaniyambadi to the west. Buy bus tickets on board from the conductor and keep small change handy. Auto-rickshaws and local taxis cover short distances when you don't want to walk, and can usually be arranged at the bus stand or railway station; for pre-planned journeys, ask at your hotel or the station for a reliable local driver rather than counting on a ride-hailing app. Ambur has no airport of its own, so fly into Chennai or Bengaluru and continue overland by train or bus.

Three days in Ambur

Day one: Base yourself in Ambur, a town in Tamil Nadu in South India known for its biryani. Settle in, then take an auto to explore the town and try the local biryani for which Ambur is famous. In the evening, head to Vaniyambadi, a nearby town in Vaniyambadi Revenue, to see another side of the region.

Day two: Use Ambur as your starting point for wider exploration of Tamil Nadu. The town sits within reach of larger centres including Vellore, Chennai, Bengaluru (Bangalore), Coimbatore, Mysore, Erode and Jolarpettai, with the Bangalore National Expressway nearby, so you can plan a day trip by road or rail. Return to Ambur in the evening.

Day three: Spend your final day in and around Ambur, buying local goods and eating South Indian food. If you are visiting from Europe or North America, the cooler months of October and November are a comfortable time to come. Take an auto for local trips before you leave.
