Phagwara

Introduction

Phagwara is a city and municipal corporation in the Kapurthala district of Punjab, India, set roughly 40 kilometres from the district headquarters of Kapurthala and about 124 kilometres from the state capital, Chandigarh. Its economy is built on production of sugar, glucose, starch, fine fabric and auto parts.

For visitors, the city is best known locally for the Shri Hanuman Garhi Temple, which gives you a single, clear anchor for a stop in the area.

Getting around

Phagwara is a compact market town at heart, so walking is the sensible way to cover the central market and temple areas, using the Shri Hanuman Garhi Temple as a landmark to orient yourself. Plan your base near the centre so these are within walking distance. The city spreads out toward the highway and toward Lovely Professional University (LPU), and those outer areas are better reached by road. Punjab can be hot, so save longer walks for the cooler parts of the day.

For anything beyond walking range, arrange road transport locally or through your hotel, agreeing on the fare before you set off. Long-distance buses are the best-documented option for arriving and leaving: FlixBus runs a Delhi–Phagwara route with roughly ten departures a day, including overnight services, and connects onward to destinations including Delhi, Gurugram and Amritsar. Phagwara has four FlixBus stops split between two locations that are some way apart — Lovely Professional University (LPU) front gate, with the southbound stop opposite the gate after the flyover and the northbound stop at the gate before it, and Satnampura on National Highway 1, with the northbound stop in front of Regenta Place Phagwara and the southbound stop opposite. Check which location your ticket uses. Keep your QR e-ticket on your phone; printing is not required, and booking ahead gets you better fares, especially on overnight departures. There is no metro or tram network in the city, so plan around road transport, and check rail schedules and station details directly with Indian Railways before you travel.

Three days in Phagwara

Day one: Start in Phagwara itself, getting your bearings in the lanes of Satnampura before heading to Shri Hanuman Garhi Temple. Plan your onward travel early, since Phagwara sits on National Highway and Indian Railways connections make the surrounding towns of Punjab easy to reach. Check into Regenta Place Phagwara as a base, and keep a QR code handy for payments around town.

Day two: Head out to Kapurthala to see the town's heritage character, then continue to Lovely Professional University (LPU), which lies near Phagwara and gives the area a student-driven energy. Long bus journeys are possible from here, with FlixBus among the operators serving routes toward Delhi and Gurugram.

Day three: Use Phagwara as a springboard for a longer run, either toward Amritsar for its Sikh heritage or east to Chandigarh, the planned city of Punjab. For a shorter final day, stay local and revisit the temple and market streets before your onward connection.
