Batala
Introduction
Batala sits in the Majha region of Punjab, within Gurdaspur district, and is one of the state's older cities. It lies roughly 39 km from Amritsar and about 32 km from Gurdaspur, the district headquarters, and it is also a police district in its own right.
As the largest industrial town in the district and its most populated urban centre, Batala makes a practical base for exploring this part of Punjab, with Amritsar's holy sites within easy reach.
Three days in Batala
Day one: Start in Batala itself, the town at the heart of the Majha region of Punjab. Walk the streets and take in the everyday rhythm of the place before heading out towards Gurdaspur, the district town nearby. It makes an easy first day of orientation, with the town's own character as your introduction to the area.
Day two: Give the day to Amritsar, the city that anchors this part of Punjab. It is the natural counterpart to Batala and the obvious place to deepen your sense of the region. Travel between the two and let the contrast between the smaller town and the larger city shape the day.
Day three: Return to Batala and use the time to revisit what you passed over earlier. With Amritsar and Gurdaspur already behind you, the town reads differently, and you can spend the day at an unhurried pace before your trip ends.
