- Region: Marathwada, Maharashtra
- Role: administrative headquarters of Parbhani District
- Distances: about 200 km from Aurangabad; about 491 km from Mumbai
Getting around
Parbhani has no metro or tram, so you get around by road, with the railway handling longer journeys. Within the city, your options are cars, taxis, auto-rickshaws, buses and two-wheelers. Auto-rickshaws are widely available and the natural choice for short hops to markets, residential areas and quick trips across town; fares are negotiable or meter-based, so settle the price before you set off. Private taxis and app-based cabs also operate, with metered fares for short trips and fixed pricing for longer travel, and are commonly used for airport transfers, railway station drops and sightseeing. Scooters and bikes can be rented in some areas and are commonly used by locals; helmets and traffic rules are enforced. Walking suits short, local errands rather than crossing the city, though the Vasantrao Naik Marathwada Agricultural University campus, with its open lots, research land and greenery, is a popular spot for early morning walks. Expect heavier traffic in the mornings and evenings, particularly near markets.
- Parbhani Junction (PBN) is the major railway station and the anchor of long-distance travel, connected to Mumbai, Hyderabad, Nanded, Aurangabad and Pune, among other places. Trains are generally the most comfortable option for long journeys; book online or at the station counter, and arrive roughly half an hour to forty-five minutes before departure.
- City and inter-city buses are operated mainly by MSRTC, with the Central Bus Stand as the primary boarding point. Regular services run to Nanded, Aurangabad, Hyderabad, Latur and nearby towns, with ordinary, express and sleeper buses available; private buses also operate for inter-city travel. MSRTC buses are a medium-comfort option, best for travel within the state and to nearby cities.
- Parbhani has no commercial airport. Arrivals come through Nanded Airport (NDC), the nearest, or Aurangabad Airport (IXU), which is farther away but has more flight options. From either, the onward leg into the city is by road, usually by private taxi or app-based cab with fixed pricing for the longer trip; arrange your transfer in advance.
- The city sits on NH 61 and NH 752, linking it to major cities and towns, while state highways provide connectivity within the Marathwada region. City roads suit cars, bikes and buses.
- Carry small cash for auto-rickshaws and local buses, and book train and inter-city bus tickets in advance, especially around peak travel periods. October to March is the most comfortable season for getting around; in the hotter summer months, travel earlier in the day.
When to go
Parbhani has a tropical climate, and the year splits into two broad seasons that shape when you might want to visit. The wet summer brings the rainy season, when the area receives much more rainfall than at any other time. If you travel then, expect wet conditions and lush green surroundings.
The remaining months are markedly drier, with far less rainfall than the summer. Travel is generally easier in this drier stretch, so plan around it if you want simpler movement and more predictable conditions.
Three days in Parbhani
Day one: Start in Parbhani itself, the district headquarters in Maharashtra's Marathwada region. It is a city of markets and institutions rather than a set-piece sight, so give your first hours to wandering its centre on foot and getting your bearings. Vasantrao Naik Marathwada Agricultural University is the anchor of the city's identity, and the streets around it show you the everyday rhythm of a Marathwada town. Keep the day unhurried; you have arrived, and the point is to settle into the place.
Day two: Use Parbhani as your base and look outward. Parbhani Junction (PBN) puts Hyderabad, Nanded and Pune within reach by train, and the MSRTC Central Bus Stand runs regular services to Latur and beyond, so a day trip in the region is straightforward. If you prefer to stay local, arrange an auto or a private vehicle, or rent a scooter, and spend the day moving between the city's edges and its market streets. Distances within the city are short enough that walking covers a good part of it.
Day three: Plan your departure with the region's connections in mind. Arrivals by air come through Nanded Airport (NDC) or Aurangabad Airport (IXU), and Aurangabad and Mumbai are the larger cities you may be linking to next. Carry what you need for the season: October to March is the comfortable window, while the months outside it turn hot and, later, wet. If time allows before you leave, take one last walk through Parbhani's centre and let the city's unhurried pace close your stay.
