Morvi

Introduction

Morbi, also written Morvi, is a city on the Kathiawar peninsula in Gujarat, India, and the seat of Morbi district. It was founded as a princely state around 1698 by Jadeja Thakor Saheb Shree Kayoji Ravaji and later served as the capital of Morvi State, which ceased to exist in 1948.

The city sits on the Machhu River, roughly 35 km from the sea and 60 km from Rajkot, so it makes a manageable stop for travellers moving through the peninsula.

Three days in Morvi

Day one: Start in Morvi, the city also spelled Morbi, on the Kathiawar peninsula in Gujarat, India. Walk the old town and take in the riverside setting along the Machhu River, which shapes the character of the place. The city's story is bound up with Morvi State and the Jadeja Thakor Saheb Shree, so let that history set the tone for your first day rather than rushing between sights.

Day two: Give the day to the city's industrial side, the trade that made Morvi known well beyond Gujarat. The name Kayoji Ravaji belongs to this story, so look for the marks of that enterprise as you move through the streets. Keep the pace slow and let the working town, not a checklist, fill the day.

Day three: Use Rajkot as your wider reference point for the region, and spend your last hours revisiting whatever in Morvi drew you back. The Machhu River and the old quarters reward a second, unhurried pass. Leave with a sense of Morvi as both a historic princely city and a place of makers.
