Vizianagaram
Introduction
Vizianagaram, also called Vijayanagaram, is a city in Andhra Pradesh and the headquarters of its district. It sits in the Eastern Ghats, roughly 24 km west of the Bay of Bengal and about 40 km north-northeast of Visakhapatnam, which makes it an easy add-on to a trip based around that larger coastal city.
The city began as the capital of the Vizianagaram estate, founded by Raja Vijayaram Raj of the Pusapati dynasty. The rulers played a notable part in the region's 18th-century history and were known as patrons of education and the arts, a legacy that still shapes how the city sees itself.
Before you go
Vizianagaram takes its name from an anglicised form of "Vijayanagaram", which means the "City of Victory" in Telugu. Knowing this before you arrive gives you a sense of the place behind the name you will see on signs and hear in conversation.
Getting there
Vizianagaram has no airport of its own. The nearest one is Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport (VTZ), which serves Visakhapatnam and lies about 31 km (19 mi) from the city, so you can fly in and cover the remaining distance by road.
By rail, you arrive at Vizianagaram Junction, a station on the South Coast Railway. It is the city's rail gateway and the practical way to reach Vizianagaram directly.
Getting around
Auto-rickshaws are widely available in Vizianagaram and the surrounding areas, and they work well for short to medium distances around the city at most times of day. Cycling is another practical option for shorter journeys and for exploring local areas, and government authorities encourage it as one of the easiest ways to get around.
- Buses: APSRTC runs services from the Vizianagaram bus station, with the city forming one of the corporation's four zones and offering both city and regional connections.
- Trains: Vizianagaram Junction sits on the Howrah-Chennai main line along the Khurda Road-Visakhapatnam section, serves as the terminus of the Jharsuguda-Vizianagaram line, and has five platforms. Free Wi-Fi developed by Indian Railways lets you check schedules and book tickets online. Nellimarla is a satellite railway station and an alternative entry point by train.
- From the airport: Visakhapatnam Airport is the nearest, roughly 62 km away, and auto-rickshaws, taxis, or bus services connect it to the city.
- By road: National Highways link Vizianagaram with Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Raipur, Hyderabad, and Chennai for intercity travel.
Where to stay
Vizianagaram is not a city where you will find a wide range of accommodation, so it is worth planning your stay in advance. The city is a convenient base for exploring the surrounding region, and most visitors stay in the town itself.
When to go
Vizianagaram has a tropical savanna climate, and humidity stays high all year no matter when you visit. Summer, from March to May, is oppressive: the heat feels heavy and being outdoors or sightseeing is demanding. The monsoon follows and continues to September, bringing good seasonal rainfall to the district, along with wet, humid conditions and rain that can disrupt your travel plans.
October and November make up the post-monsoon or retreating monsoon season. The district benefits from both the southwest and northeast monsoon, so rain can still occur in this window. The fine weather season runs from December to February and is the most comfortable stretch of the year for a visit, though humidity remains high year-round.
Three days in Vizianagaram
Day one: Arrive at Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport (VTZ) or Vizianagaram Junction on the South Coast Railway, then settle into the city itself. Buses run by APSRTC, autos and trains along the Howrah–Chennai and Khurda Road–Jharsuguda lines make the town easy to reach, and free Wi-Fi at Indian Railways stations helps you plan. Spend the afternoon getting your bearings in Vizianagaram, once the seat of Raja Vijayaram Raj and the Pusapati line, and take in the Telugu character of the place before an early night.
- Arrive via VTZ or Vizianagaram Junction
- Get around by auto, bus or cycle
- Orient yourself in the city centre
Day two: Head out towards Nellimarla, a short trip from Vizianagaram, and use the day for cycling or walking through the surrounding countryside. The town sits within Andhra Pradesh, with the Eastern Ghats rising inland and the Bay of Bengal not far to the east, so the landscape shifts quickly from plains to hills. Keep the pace slow and let the heat of the day dictate your timing.
- Day trip to Nellimarla
- Cycle or walk the rural roads
- Watch the terrain change towards the Eastern Ghats
Day three: Use the morning to revisit whatever drew you most in Vizianagaram, then plan your onward travel. Visakhapatnam is within easy reach, and National Highways connect the town towards Vijayawada, Raipur and Hyderabad, while trains and APSRTC buses cover the same ground. If you are flying out, allow time to reach Visakhapatnam Airport or VTZ. Knowing the rail and road links in advance makes the departure straightforward.
- Revisit the city sights
- Onward to Visakhapatnam or beyond by road or rail
- Allow time for the airport or junction
