Proddatur
Introduction
Proddatur is a town in the YSR Kadapa District of Andhra Pradesh, set on the banks of the Penna River. It serves as a municipality and as the mandal headquarters of Proddatur mandal.
Its municipal body is among the oldest in the region, having been formed before Independence, and the town was formerly part of Kadapa District.
Getting around
Proddatur has no metro or tram network, so getting around locally means buses, auto-rickshaws, or your own two feet. The town is compact enough that many trips within the commercial core are short, and the bus stands act as the anchor points for onward travel. Walking makes the most sense in the central shopping streets, which are busy and where the gold and clothing shops cluster; many of the old temples, including Rameshwaram on the banks of the Penna River, are within the city and practical to reach on foot. For anything farther out, take an auto or a bus.
Buses are the backbone of public transport, with two APSRTC bus stations: the Old Bus Stand and the New Bus Stand. Different boarding points serve different routes, so it helps to know which stop matches your destination before you set out. The Old Bus Stand covers Korrapadu, Allagadda, Duvvuru and Chagalamarri; the Sudha Theater Stop serves Kadapa; the Anwar Theater Stop covers Vempalli, Pulivendula and Tadipatri; the TB Road Stop and Vijayakumar Theater Stop serve Jammalamadugu; and the New Bus Stand handles Mydukur and Yerraguntla, with the Yerraguntla Bypass Stop and Bypass 4 Roads Stop also serving Yerraguntla. Long-distance and intercity departures leave mainly from the New Bus Stand, which has multiple platforms, an ATM at its entrance, an auto-rickshaw stand on its right side, and two-wheeler and cycle parking for a small fee. Tickets are bought on the bus from the conductor. Auto-rickshaws are the main on-demand option for short trips, and it is worth agreeing on the fare before you set off, especially for solo trips. The source material does not describe app-based ride-hailing or conventional taxi services, so plan on autos and buses as your reliable local options. Keep small change handy, and confirm current schedules locally or via the district bus station helpline before you travel.
