Sumedang Utara

Getting around

Sumedang Utara has no airport and no railway station of its own, so every journey here ends on the road. If you fly in, the nearest option is Kertajati International Airport (KJT) in Majalengka, with Bandung's airport (BDO) a comparable distance away; Jakarta's airports are considerably farther and only make sense if you're already committed to a Jakarta itinerary. From any of them, the final leg is by taxi or bus, and ride-hailing apps are widely used in the region with transparent fares if you'd rather not negotiate. Rail can only get you part of the way: the nearest railhead is Bandung station, which has regular services from Jakarta and other major Indonesian cities, and from there you continue by road. Intercity buses are the workhorse of long-distance travel in this part of Java, running from Bandung and from hubs including Jakarta, but travel times vary considerably with traffic, so treat any schedule as a rough guide and build in slack for connections.

English is common in hotels, which is where you're most likely to get help arranging transport. Between journeys, try Tahu Sumedang, the fried tofu sold widely throughout the city.

Three days in Sumedang Utara

Day one: Arrive at Kertajati International Airport (KJT) in Majalengka, the closest airport to Sumedang Utara, or come overland from Bandung (BDO) or Jakarta by intercity rail or bus. From the station or terminal, reach your base in Sumedang Utara by angkot, or by ride-hailing apps such as Grab or Gojek. Keep Indonesian Rupiah on hand for conventional transport, and allow for limited English away from the main routes. Settle in and try tahu Sumedang, the town's fried tofu, as an easy first taste of the area.

Day two: Spend the day exploring Sumedang Utara on foot, walking between the neighbourhoods to get a feel for the town's character. Use angkot or a Grab or Gojek ride to cover longer stretches, and keep Indonesian Rupiah ready for conventional transport. Pause for tahu Sumedang along the way, and allow for limited English when asking directions.

Day three: Take a final walk through Sumedang Utara and pick up tahu Sumedang before you leave. For the onward journey, head by angkot or Grab or Gojek to the rail or bus connections toward Bandung (BDO), Jakarta or Kertajati International Airport (KJT) in Majalengka. Keep Indonesian Rupiah for conventional transport and allow extra time, since English is limited.
