Yuen Long San Hui

Introduction

Yuen Long Town sits at the centre of Yuen Long District in the New Territories, and serves as the heart of both the older settlement and the surrounding new town. As the district centre, it is the focal point of the area's civic and commercial life.

Getting around

San Hui is a compact, walkable commercial quarter, and you can treat it as a base for the wider district. The practical landmarks are all within a few minutes of one another on foot: the bus stops on Shui Che Kwun Street and Castle Peak Road, the Light Rail stop at Fung Nin Road, and Long Ping MTR station. Long Ping, the closest heavy-rail stop to San Hui, is roughly a five-minute walk away, and from there you can ride the Tuen Ma line toward Wu Kai Sha and connect onward into Kowloon. Fung Nin Road is the nearest Light Rail stop, about a four-minute walk, served by routes 610, 614 and 615. The town is divided east–west by the Shan Pui River and north–south by Castle Peak Road, so orienting yourself around those two lines makes navigation simple; the eastern side near Castle Peak Road is where the shops and offices cluster.

Beyond walking, your options are the MTR rail network (heavy rail plus Light Rail), franchised buses, public light buses and taxis. Pay per journey with an Octopus card or contactless payment on the MTR and most buses, or in cash on minibuses and taxis. San Hui is well served by bus stops within a minute or two of Shui Che Kwun Street, including stops on Castle Peak Road near Kam Fung Building and outside the same building, plus stops on Kuk Ting Street, Tai Fung Street and Yau San Street. Useful services include local and cross-district KMB routes such as 68M to Tsuen Wan Station and 68X toward Mong Kok, LWB airport routes including the A36, A37, E36, E36A, E36P and E36S plus the overnight N30 and NA36, boundary-crossing routes such as B1 to Lok Ma Chau Station and B2, and MTR Bus feeder routes K65, K66, K68, K73 and K74. Green minibuses run fixed routes with fixed fares, while red minibuses are more flexible and typically charge in cash; red minibuses from Yuen Long run to destinations such as Tuen Mun, Jordan, Sheung Shui, Tai Po, Tsuen Wan, Lok Ma Chau and Kwun Tong. Both urban red taxis and New Territories green taxis serve the area — red taxis can take you to Kowloon and Hong Kong Island, while green taxis are for journeys within the New Territories, and both can connect you to the airport. Taxis are metered and generally paid in cash, so keep some change handy. If you are out late, the Tuen Ma line and Light Rail run until well after midnight, and overnight buses and minibuses cover the gap.

Three days in Yuen Long San Hui

Day one: Base yourself in Yuen Long Town, the heart of Yuen Long District in the New Territories, and get your bearings around San Hui. Shui Che Kwun Street and Castle Peak Road are the main arteries, and the Light Rail runs along Fung Nin Road, so you can hop on and off without much planning. Long Ping MTR on the Tuen Ma line puts you within easy reach of Wu Kai Sha and Kowloon, while the Shan Pui River gives you a quieter stretch to walk. Beyond the MTR, pay your way with an Octopus card. Landmarks such as Kam Fung Building sit near Kuk Ting Street, Tai Fung Street and Yau San Street, where you can eat your way through the neighbourhood.

Day two: Use the Light Rail and the MTR to push further out. Useful bus routes include KMB services toward Tsuen Wan Station, Mong Kok and Jordan, and the LWB network toward Lok Ma Chau Station, with the MTR Bus covering Green routes around Yuen Long, Tuen Mun, Sheung Shui, Tai Po, Tsuen Wan, Lok Ma Chau and Kwun Tong. Keep your Octopus topped up and treat the day as a loop through the district rather than a single destination.

Day three: Slow down and stay local. Wander San Hui's street grid again, follow the Shan Pui River, and let the Light Rail carry you between Fung Nin Road and Long Ping. If you are heading onward, Long Ping MTR connects you to the Tuen Ma line for Kowloon and Wu Kai Sha, while KMB and LWB routes link you to Tsuen Wan, Mong Kok, Jordan, Sheung Shui, Tai Po, Lok Ma Chau and Kwun Tong.
