Yuen Long Kau Hui
Introduction
Yuen Long Kau Hui is an area within Yuen Long, in the Yuen Long District of Hong Kong. You'll find it in the western New Territories, so it sits away from the dense urban core and within a district that stretches across this western part of the territory.
Getting around
Yuen Long Kau Hui sits directly north of Yuen Long MTR station on the Tuen Ma Line, roughly an eight-minute walk from the Yuen Long Kau Hui Road area, with services running towards Wu Kai Sha and first trains in the early morning and last trains past midnight. Long Ping MTR station, also on the Tuen Ma Line, lies directly north of Tai Kiu Tsuen on the western side. The Light Rail is useful for short hops around Yuen Long and towards Tin Shui Wai: routes 610 and 615 serve the area, with Tai Tong Road the nearest stop (about a five-minute walk) and Yuen Long stop a longer walk of around ten minutes. Light Rail platforms are open rather than gated, so you tap your Octopus card on the reader before boarding and again on leaving.
Buses are the workhorse for local and rural journeys, with stops on Shan Pui Road near The Parcville and Shan Pui Hung Tin Tsuen, on Yuen Long Kau Hui Road near Chung Sing School, and the larger interchanges at Yuen Long Station and Yuen Long Station (North) Public Transport Interchange, both around an eight-minute walk. Routes cover local estates, rural and cross-boundary destinations, Tin Shui Wai and Au Tau, and airport-linked E-prefixed services. Pay with Octopus or exact cash; taxis can be flagged or picked up near the MTR stations and major interchanges, and ride-hailing apps are a useful fallback late at night. The historic core — Cheung Shing Street, Lee Yick Street and Wine Street, separating the walled villages of Nam Pin Wai and Sai Pin Wai — is compact and best explored on foot, as are the surrounding villages and the stations. Shan Pui Tsuen, north of the hill, is reached by a small boat near the village entrance that ferries across the Shan Pui River towards Nam Sang Wai.
Three days in Yuen Long Kau Hui
Day one: Arrive in Yuen Long Kau Hui by way of the Yuen Long MTR station on the Tuen Ma Line, or by Light Rail, bus or public transport interchange routes if you are coming from elsewhere in the New Territories. Once you are in the kau hui, walk its streets on foot: Cheung Shing Street, Lee Yick Street and Wine Street form the old commercial heart, and the surrounding lanes take you past Nam Pin Wai and Sai Pin Wai. Pay your fares with an Octopus card and keep the first day slow, letting the district's market streets and temple-side lanes set the pace.
Day two: Head north-west toward Shan Pui Tsuen and the Shan Pui River, following Shan Pui Road past The Parcville and Shan Pui Hung Tin Tsuen. Continue to Nam Sang Wai, where the river opens into wet fields and fish ponds, and walk the paths between them. On the way back, pass Chung Sing School and Tai Kiu Tsuen, then return to Yuen Long Kau Hui for an evening meal. If you would rather stay on transport, the Light Rail links Yuen Long with Tin Shui Wai and other stops across Yuen Long District.
Day three: Use Yuen Long Station or Long Ping MTR as your starting point and take the Tuen Ma Line toward Wu Kai Sha, or ride the Light Rail and buses out along Tai Tong Road and Au Tau for a change of scene. Come back to Yuen Long for a last walk through the kau hui's streets, then leave via the Yuen Long MTR or the public transport interchange. Three days is enough to see the old settlement, the river plain and the wider district without rushing.
