Tsuen Wan

Introduction

Tsuen Wan is a town built on a bay in the western New Territories of Hong Kong, sitting opposite Tsing Yi Island across Rambler Channel. What began as a market town grew out of the surrounding villages and the fleets of fishing boats that worked these waters, and the modern city is centred around Tsuen Wan station of the MTR.

The town's coastline has been extended over time through land reclamation, so the waterfront you see today reflects a long process of change rather than a single natural shore. Use the MTR station as your anchor for exploring the town and its surroundings.

Three days in Tsuen Wan

Day one: Base yourself in Tsuen Wan, on the New Territories side of Hong Kong, and use the MTR to get your bearings. The town sits across the Rambler Channel from Tsing Yi Island, so the waterfront is the natural place to start, watching the channel traffic between the two shores before wandering into the streets behind it.

Day two: Cross the Rambler Channel to Tsing Yi Island and spend the day there, using the MTR to move between the island's stops. What you find is a different pace from Tsuen Wan, with the harbour and the island's own neighbourhoods to explore before returning across the water for the evening.

Day three: Use your last day to fill in what you missed in Tsuen Wan itself, then follow the MTR to another part of Hong Kong if time allows. The New Territories setting means Tsuen Wan works well as a quieter base, with the MTR making the rest of the territory easy to reach.
