Tseung Kwan O

Introduction

Tseung Kwan O is one of Hong Kong's nine new towns, built mainly on reclaimed land in the northern half of Junk Bay, in the southeastern New Territories. The town takes its name from the bay it sits on.

Getting around

Tseung Kwan O was designed around transit, so the MTR is your backbone here. The Tseung Kwan O Line links the town's main districts — Po Lam, Hang Hau, Tseung Kwan O Town Centre, Tiu Keng Leng and LOHAS Park — each with its own station, and at Tiu Keng Leng you can change onto the Kwun Tong Line for Kowloon or an alternative route into the city. Trains run from early morning until well past midnight, so late dinners and evening events in town are not a problem, and moving between neighbourhoods by rail lets you skip the area's road traffic entirely.

Buses and green minibuses fill in where the rail line does not go — housing estates, the industrial estate, the hospital, beaches and the rural parts of Sai Kung District — with operators including KMB, Citybus and green minibus services, some routes jointly run. Cross-harbour, airport (A28/A28X, E22A) and overnight "N" routes also serve the town. Load a stored-value smart card and tap it across rail, bus and minibus rather than buying separate tickets; rail fares are charged by distance, so tap out correctly at your destination. Change modes at the public transport interchanges, above all the one on Tong Chun Street beside Tseung Kwan O station. Taxis are metered and are the most flexible way to reach outlying villages or a specific address late at night, and ride-hailing apps operate too, though availability varies. Walking works well within a district, but because open space was planned at the edges, parks separate the neighbourhoods — so walk freely inside one, and take the train or a bus when crossing to the next.

Three days in Tseung Kwan O

Day one: Base yourself around the Town Centre, the heart of Tseung Kwan O, and get your bearings on the MTR. The Tseung Kwan O Line links Po Lam, Hang Hau, Tiu Keng Leng and LOHAS Park, and connects onward to the Kwun Tong Line toward Kowloon, so you can move around the New Territories side of Hong Kong without much effort. Spend the afternoon on Tong Chun Street, where the waterfront and the everyday bustle of the district give you a feel for how Tseung Kwan O works as a place to live rather than just pass through.

Day two: Head for the water. Tseung Kwan O sits on Junk Bay, and the harbourfront is the district's best asset for a slow morning of walking. If you want to push further afield, buses run by KMB and Citybus serve the area, and taxis are easy to pick up; both can take you toward Sai Kung District, where the pace drops and the scenery opens up. Keep the evening simple back near the Town Centre.

Day three: Use the MTR to explore the line's other stops. Tiu Keng Leng and LOHAS Park each have their own character, and a ride through to the interchange with the Kwun Tong Line makes for an easy half-day out toward Kowloon. Trains are frequent and the network is straightforward, so you can load a card, change lines as needed and cover a lot of ground without planning too hard. Finish with a last walk along the Tseung Kwan O waterfront before you go.
