Kwai Chung

Introduction

Kwai Chung is an urban area in the New Territories of Hong Kong, forming part of Tsuen Wan New Town alongside Tsing Yi Island. Together with Tsing Yi Island, it makes up the Kwai Tsing District.

Getting around

Kwai Chung sits in the New Territories, but it is well connected to the rest of Hong Kong by rail and road, and you can get around easily without a car. The MTR is the backbone of the network and usually the cheapest and most predictable option. From central Kowloon, the Tsuen Wan line runs directly to Kwai Fong station in roughly eighteen to nineteen minutes, with trains about every five minutes and no transfers needed. Fares are inexpensive for short hops, and you pay by tapping in and out at the gates. Buses fill in the gaps the metro does not cover, with several routes running direct between Kowloon and Kwai Chung Plaza on Kwai Foo Road and stops along Hing Fong Road. You pay as you board. Two habits make everything easier: carry a stored-value travel card or a contactless payment method accepted on the MTR and buses, and keep a little cash on hand for taxis, since not every driver takes electronic payment.

Taxis are the fastest way to cover short distances and are plentiful. Urban red taxis serve most of the territory, while New Territories green taxis focus on the New Territories, which includes Kwai Chung; either can be appropriate depending on where you start. A short hop from central Kowloon can take only a few minutes, making a taxi the quickest choice when you are in a hurry or carrying luggage. Ride-hailing apps are used too, but the taxi is the established fallback late at night or away from a convenient stop. Walking works well for the last leg of a journey: the core districts of Kwai Fong and Kwai Hing are compact, but this is a hilly, built-up area, so a short distance on a map can involve footbridges, underpasses and indirect routes. If you are staying near Kwai Chung Plaza, many shops, eateries and services are within an easy walk. For anything further afield, combine a short walk with the MTR or a bus.

Three days in Kwai Chung

Day one: Base yourself in Kwai Chung, on the Hong Kong side of the New Territories, and use The MTR to get your bearings. Kwai Fong and Kwai Hing are your stations here, with Kwai Chung Plaza and the streets around Kwai Foo Road and Hing Fong Road giving you a first taste of the district's everyday bustle. Walking between the stations is easy, and buses and taxis fill the gaps if you would rather ride.

Day two: Head out to Tsuen Wan New Town and Tsuen Wan for a change of scene, or cross to Tsing Yi Island if you want to see how the Kwai Tsing District fits together. From Kowloon, the MTR makes both directions simple, and urban buses run alongside it. Fares are low, so you can move around without much planning.

Day three: Slow down and stay local in Kwai Chung. Two days of riding and walking have shown you the shape of the place; spend the last one on foot around Kwai Fong and Kwai Hing, dipping into Kwai Chung Plaza and following Kwai Foo Road and Hing Fong Road at your own pace. If you have time before you leave, Together is the note to end on.
