Ilion

Introduction

You will find Ilion situated in the western part of the Athens agglomeration. This area serves as both a town and a suburb where you can experience the local atmosphere of this region of Greece.

Before you go

Before you visit this region, familiarize yourself with the local heritage and geology. You will find that the area is defined by its identity as the county seat and its association with Herkimer diamonds, which are double-sided quartz crystals of high clarity.

Getting there

You can reach Herkimer by car via Exit 30 of the New York State Thruway (I-90), where you will turn right toward Herkimer and then left toward Mohawk. For those traveling by bike, the area is accessible along the New York State Canal Trail; upon reaching the MOVAC Ambulance Service garage, take a left onto NYS Route 5-S and another left onto Main Street.

If you prefer to travel by train, the nearest Amtrak station is located in Utica. Since there are no public transportation options from the station to Herkimer, you should arrange for a taxi or a private ride before your departure. Alternatively, you can fly into either Hancock International Airport in Syracuse or Albany International Airport in Albany, both of which provide flights to various destinations across the country.

Getting around

You can traverse Herkimer and the surrounding area most easily by car. If you prefer to cycle, the NYS Canal Trail connects both Herkimer and Mohawk directly, allowing you to ride along the canal toward neighboring communities like Little Falls and Utica.

Keep in mind that because the trail only extends in an eastern direction, you will need to ride on the roads if you wish to travel further west toward Utica.

Where to stay

You can find accommodations at the Ace of Diamonds Campground located along NYS Route 28 in Middleville. This site provides amenities including water and electrical hookups, as well as restrooms and showers.

Food & drink

You can satisfy your cravings for diverse cuisines across the local dining scene. Choose from a variety of options including Italian favorites at Yetty's Pizza and Pasta, fresh selections at Tokyo Sushi, or traditional Greek Gyros. For a different atmosphere, you might enjoy a meal at Crystal Chandelier Restaurant or visit Crazy Otto's Empire Diner.

What to see and do

You can explore the local history by visiting the F.E. Spinner Mansion on East Main Street in Mohawk, where the former Secretary of the Treasury under Abraham Lincoln once resided. For a more hands-on experience, travel to the Ace of Diamonds Mine in Middleville, where you can use rented tools like rock hammers and sledge hammers to collect Herkimer diamonds directly from the site.
