Ashaiman

Introduction

Ashaiman is a constituency in the Tema Municipal District of the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. It is represented in the Parliament of Ghana, electing a single Member of Parliament by the first past the post system; Ernest Henry Norgbey holds the seat.

Getting around

Ashaiman is served entirely by road-based transport, so plan your movements around buses, taxis and shared vehicles. There is no metro or tram network to rely on, and the town's rail provision is not something you can count on for day-to-day travel. The Ashaiman bus station is your anchor for onward journeys: buses connect the town with the wider Accra–Tema corridor, and Bus 998 runs directly between the Ashaiman station and Equip station in Accra, operated by the AMA Department of Transport, departing roughly every twenty minutes daily with a journey time of around an hour. Fares are typically paid on board or at the station rather than through an advance pass, and schedules shift with traffic and time of day, so check live departure and arrival information on a journey-planning app such as Moovit before you set out.

As a rule, choose a taxi when time matters and a bus when cost matters.

When to go

Ashaiman has a tropical savanna climate that stays hot all year, so you can expect warmth whenever you visit. The year divides into a wet season and a dry season, and your choice between them comes down to how much rain you want to deal with rather than how warm it will be.

If you visit during the wet season, rain is typical and you should expect wet conditions around town. The rain arrives with warmth rather than cooler weather, so it stays hot even when it pours. In the dry season, months are typically dry with little rain, meaning heat without much wet weather. Either way, pack for heat.

Three days in Ashaiman

Day one: Begin in Ashaiman itself, a town in the Tema Municipal District of the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. It is represented in Parliament by Ernest Henry Norgbey. The Ashaiman sits close to both Accra and Tema, so you can use it as your base. Buses equip the AMA Department of Transport, and fares are listed on Moovit. For a first meal, try Osu, Paloma or Papaye. Allow time to find the Ashaiman Overhead and the Tema Motorway Total.

Day two: Head out to Adabraka and the Timber Market. Taxis are run by operators such as The Supreme Taxi. Driving and walking are both possible. Carry water, because Ashaiman can be warm and humid in April, June, September and November. Most journeys are short, so you can return to Ashaiman by evening.

Day three: Use the bus network again, checking fares on Moovit before you set off. Move between Ashaiman, Accra and Tema, and let the Tema Municipal District and Greater Accra Region shape your route. Other stops such as Osu, Paloma and Papaye are useful for meals. Allow a final walk near the Ashaiman Overhead before you leave.
