Courbevoie
Introduction
Located in the Hauts-de-Seine department within the Île-de-France region, Courbevoie serves as a suburb of Paris. You can find the center of this commune situated just a short distance from the city limits of Paris.
Before you go
Before you visit, understand that while this district is widely associated with Paris, it sits outside the official city limits. You will find yourself in a purpose-built business district where skyscrapers were concentrated in one area during the 1960s to preserve the character of central Paris.
The area actually spans the borders of three communes within the Hauts-de-Seine department: Nanterre, Courbevoie, and Puteaux.
Getting there
You can reach the La Défense district, a major office hub within the Paris region, via several transit options. The area is well connected to the rest of the region through both the métro and regional rail lines.
Depending on your starting point, you can access the area via the La Défense station or the Esplanade de la Défense station. These connections include the RER A and E lines, Transilien L and U trains, and the T2 tramway. Note that because the Rer A and E stations are located in zone 3, they cannot be accessed with a T+ ticket. If you find the complex station layout confusing, look for the color-coded signs of the Les Quatres Temps shopping center to help guide your way.
Where to stay
Staying in the La Défense area provides a convenient base for exploring central Paris via a direct metro connection and offers easy access to Versailles. While this business district is characterized by its atmosphere of steel and concrete with limited nightlife, you can expect larger rooms and efficient service compared to downtown options. If you choose to stay within the neighboring municipalities, you may find more affordable rates, though your transit times will increase. Note that La Défense is not well connected to either airport.
When staying in central La Défense, you should rely on the metro, RER, or tram rather than driving, as navigating the underground motorways and parking systems can be difficult. You will likely need to traverse the retrofuturistic Esplanade to reach your accommodation. Depending on your preference for style and amenities, you can choose from various options:
- Budget: Options include the Ibis Paris La Défense Centre or the no-frills Adagio Access properties in both Leonard da Vinci and Place Charras. The ibis La Défense Courbevoie is also available nearby.
- Mid-range: You can choose from several Adagio locations, such as those at Parc or Kleber, along with the Kyriad Paris Ouest options in either Courbevoie or Puteaux. Other choices include the Hotel Mercure Paris La Défense and Citadines La Défense.
- Splurge: Higher-end selections include the Fraser Suites Harmonie Paris La Défense, the Hilton within the CNIT arch, the Renaissance Paris Hotel La Défense, and the Sofitel La Défense. The Pullman Paris La Défense also offers a modern experience with varying room styles.
Food & drink
You can find a wide variety of dining options throughout the area, ranging from casual snacks to upscale experiences. The 4 Temps offers numerous food and snack spots, while rue de Bezons provides budget-friendly alternatives including a bakery, Turkish eateries, and a late-night fast-food option. For a convenient stop, the La Coupole underground gallery features several restaurants and express cafés. If you prefer more sophisticated dining, the hotels in La Défense house refined establishments such as Quinte & Sens, which serves modern cuisine.
For your wine needs, Apogé serves as a comprehensive destination for French wine. You can explore an extensive selection of wines by the glass or sample any bottle before you purchase it. This venue combines a bar and merchant with an oenology school, offering expert advice and frequent tastings with producers on its terrace.
What to see and do
Explore the architectural evolution of La Défense, where each building reflects different trends from its era of construction. You can visit the Grande Arche, a high-rise that resembles a hollow cube, or explore the CNIT, which features the world's largest unsupported concrete span enclosed space. For a deeper look into the history of the area, the Musée de La Défense displays various plans and scale models. You can also find unique structures like the Notre-Dame de Pentecôte church or visit the Paris La Défense Arena, a domed stadium capable of hosting everything from court sports to concerts.
The district is filled with public art, including several large-scale works by renowned modern artists such as César Baldaccini and Alexander Calder. In Courbevoie, you can find the Pavillon des Indes, a wooden Indian pavilion that serves as a historical curiosity amidst the modern surroundings. Other notable sites in the area include the Chapelle Saint-Martin de Porrès and a Fontaine Wallace.
