Hosa'ina

Introduction

Hosaena, also written Hossana or Hosaina, sits in the central south of Ethiopia, where it serves as the administrative centre of both the Hadiya Zone and the Central Ethiopia Regional State. The town holds the status of a woreda in its own right, and it was formerly part of Limo woreda, which still surrounds it.

Set at an elevation of roughly 2,177 metres above sea level, Hosaena is a highland town, so you can expect cooler, thinner air than in Ethiopia's lowlands. Its position on the central southern plateau makes it a natural base for exploring the surrounding Hadiya Zone countryside.

Getting around

Hosa'ina has no metro, tram, or urban rail network, and no rail link to Addis Ababa or anywhere else, so road transport is the only practical option. The town centre is compact and walkable, with markets, banks, churches, the post office, and the hospital all reachable on foot or with a short ride. Be mindful of the altitude, which is over 2,000 metres: walking can feel more tiring than you expect, especially on hills or in your first days of acclimatisation.

There is no major international airport in Hosa'ina. Visitors arriving by air fly into Addis Ababa and continue overland by bus or private road transport via Welkite and Endibir, then take a local minibus or taxi from the bus station to their accommodation. Carry cash for minibus fares and taxis, allow extra time for road travel, and confirm schedules locally as timetables can change. For sites outside the walkable centre, such as the rock-hewn Dawabelo Cave, arrange transport in town in advance.

Three days in Hosa'ina

Day one: Arrive in Hosa'ina, known also as Hosaina or Hossana, the capital of the Hadiya Zone in the Central Ethiopia Regional State. Settle into the town and take a local taxi to get your bearings. In the afternoon, visit the market area to get a feel for daily life, and ask about local transport options for the days ahead.

Day two: Head out to Dawabelo Cave, one of the area's natural attractions. Arrange your transport in advance, as local taxis and intercity services connect Hosa'ina with surrounding towns such as Welkite and Endibir. Carry what you need for the day, including water and food, since facilities may be limited.

Day three: Spend your final day exploring the town itself. Hosa'ina sits within the Limo and Set areas of the Hadiya Zone, and its markets and streets offer a chance to buy local goods. If you are continuing your journey, intercity buses link the town with Addis Ababa and other destinations.
