Inda Silase

Introduction

Shire, also known as Shire Inda Selassie, is a city and separate woreda in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia. It serves as the administrative center of the Shire Awraja, and it later became the administrative center of Semien Mi'irabawi Zone. The city was formerly part of Tahtay Koraro district.

When to go

Inda Silase has a tropical savanna climate, so your trip will be shaped by two clearly different halves of the year. The wet season brings the bulk of the year's rain, turning the countryside lush and green but leaving roads muddy and travel slower. Plan for wet weather if you visit then, and allow extra time for getting around.

The rest of the year is markedly drier, with little rain across these months. You can expect dusty, sunny conditions and easier travel on unpaved routes, which makes the dry stretch the simpler time to move around and reach the surrounding countryside.

Three days in Inda Silase

Day one: Settle into Inda Silase, the town also known as Shire Inda Selassie, in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia. Take your time getting oriented in the town centre and let the pace of the place set your rhythm. In the afternoon, plan a gentle wander through the surrounding streets of Tahtay Koraro and the wider Semien Mi area to get a feel for the landscape.

Day two: Use Inda Silase as your base for exploring the wider Shire Awraja. Spend the morning moving between the town and the nearby countryside, and plan your route so you have time to pause and take in the views. Keep the afternoon loose, returning to town for a slow evening.

Day three: Give your last day to Shire itself, revisiting whatever caught your attention earlier and filling in the gaps. Keep your plan simple, leaving room to sit and watch the town go about its day before you move on.
